Help all of a sudden I can't open my address book!?!

I can't open my address book. Whe I click on it and the menu bar on the top changes to address book but nothing shows on my screen. If I right click and choose "show all windows" then it appears but disappears when I try to click on it to use it. Any ideas how I could fix this? I have tried shutting down and restarting my computer.

Going back to macjack's first syggestion:

Sign out of iCloud and quit AddressBook.

Open a Finder Window. Highlight your user account (Home folder). Type "c" in the search field. Click the "+" button on the side to add search fields. The first is "kind" is "any". Add "File Visibility" is "Visible or Invisible". Then add "System Files" "Are Included".

Be sure your user account is highlighted in the search bar. Finish the search field by typing "com.apple.addressbook.". (add the "dot" at the end of addressbook)

Under Developer in the results list, delete all files in the window that begin with "com.apple.addressbook." They should be moved to the trash, but do not empty the Trash. If needed, you can right click on the file and the trash and put it back.

Let's go back to your original report:

I can't open my address book. Whe I click on it and the menu bar on the top changes to address book but nothing shows on my screen. If I right click and choose "show all windows" then it appears but disappears when I try to click on it to use it.

Enter Mission Control (see the built-in help for instructions.) At the top of the display is a row of miniaturized windows representing "spaces." If one of them contains the Address Book window, move the cursor into it. A "close" icon will appear in the top left corner of the space. Click that icon, then exit Mission Control.

Okay, so with regard to Glenns suggestion I followed your instructions and put those files in the trash. There were two files that wouldn't move. both titled com.apple.addressbook.plist. I tried opening address book same problem as before. I went back and thought I would repeat the process having closed address book again. Now there are 3 files that couldn't be moved to the trash. Smong the files that did move to the trash (and immediately got replaced are a couple titled com.apple.addressbook.plist.lockfile I don't know if that is important?

With regard to Linc's suggestion in mission control there are two small windows at the top one is labelled dashboard and the other is desktop. The address book doesn't appear in either. It does appear in the main window along with any other programmes that I have open. It is a different size to what address book usually is taller and narrower. There is no close icon when I move my cursor over it just a blue border to highlight it. If I click on it I get taken back to my usual desktop and address book is not there. (The Menu bar for address book is same as always but not the address book).

I don't think it will let you delete those aliases either. I have them also.

I don't think this was mentioned, but did you try to repair permissions with Disk Utility?

Also, you might try repairing your User Permissions.

  1. Turn on the Mac whilst holding down cmd + R. You can let go once you see a spinning dial. You will then see the ”Mac OS X Utilities” screen.
  2. On the top menu, click Utilities, then click Terminal.
  3. Type resetpassword and press Enter.
  4. Click on your main hard drive.
  5. In the dropdown box under “Select the user account” make sure to select your username.
  6. Underneath where it says “Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs”, click the Reset button.
  7. Press cmd + Q to quit the Reset Password application.
  8. Press cmd + Q again to quit the Terminal.
  9. Press cmd + Q one more time and click Restart.

Let's eleminate the preference files.

Sign out of iCloud. Quit all applications.

Go to the Home Library folder again (please be sure you're in the correct one). Find the Preference folder. Select all files within and either create a folder on the desktop and drag all files to it or move them to the trash but don't empty. We will put them back later.

Try address book.

In the Finder, select GO and hold the option key down as you did before.

If you want quick reference to it, when you have it open in a window, you will see Library at the to of the Finder Window. Click on the folder on the left side of it and drag it to the sidebar. Then you will just need to click on it in the sidebar in any Finder window.

If you want to unhide it to always show in your User Folder, copy and paste this in terminal and hit return:

chflags nohidden ~/Library

This is your Home Library where all of your setting for applications and system configurations are stored. Each user has their own user account and Library so they can configure the system for their use. Since you said all other users had no problems, the problem has to be within your user account. We just need to be sure that's where you are at, and not in another user Library or the System Library.

Hi Mac militia 13. This is the message in console:

Apr 21 10:23:30 Rachels-MacBook-Air Address Book[297]: Error, could not create MachMessagePort for com.apple.AddressBook.abd

Actualy just to clarify. when I went into console and system log this was the last error already there. I quit out of Address book and clicked on it again. The toolbar at the top came up like usual but no address book. there was no new entry in the system log
