I can probably help you out.

But I'll need more info.

Is this an issue with your USB ports? Are they working for everything else? (Examples being external hard disks and iPhone, etc)

If they are, then there's two other things to check:

Your keyboard (What kind of keyboard? M-Audio? Novation? AKAI?). Is it bus powered, or does it have it's own power supply? If so. Make sure that it is receiving power from the iMac. My M-Audio Axiom had an issue with a loose connector on board that needed a quick solder, loose USB meant no power. It could be a case of this.

Is it showing up in MIDI-Studio? If so, make sure it is routed correctly in there. Some funny things can happen, especially if this is a lower end keyboard, and you may just need to nudge it in the right direction.

If it powers on and still isn't communicating (with what software? Ableton? Logic? Reason?) make sure it is recognized by the software. Reason will ignore keyboards until you tell it to pay attention in Preferences. Ableton too.

If it STILL won't budge, try using a powered USB hub. I know there was an issue with the first generation of Lynnfield (Core i3, i7, i5) that the USB host controller didn't play nicely with certain music peripherals. (Huge nightmare getting a Launchpad to act right.) USB hubs have a way of magically fixing things sometimes.

If you STILL aren't any farther on, then I would suggest trying another keyboard. If that one works, and all the above hasn't, then you likely have a dud MIDI controller. Warranty it or turn it into an art piece or something.

Hope I could help!

With a little more info, I can probably hold your hand a little further on the matter.

Howdy!

Thanks for the reply.

The keyboard is an M-Audio Keystation 88es. It doesn't show up in the Audio/MIDI setup. I tried hooking up a friends USB keyboard and his works on his but not mine.

I've tried a USB hub (powered) as well, still no go. However, I have an AlphaTrack and it works just fine. I've tried switching ports, SMC and PRAM reset, still no go.

I'm running Logic 9.1.7 and just updated to Lion 10.7.3. My iMac is a 27-inch 3.1GhZ Intel Core I5 with 4GB of RAM

Thing is, I've had it in storage in the box for 2 months as well as all my other gear while I was in the hospital. I immediately updated all the software. Everything was working fine before I went into the hospital and put it in storage.

I hope that's enough info to help. I really, really want to start back making music again :-)

Hey there!

It sounds to me like AVID may just be behind on the driver update and perhaps don't support the only new variable. (that being your update to 10.7.3)

Is there any way we could try three things:

Plug your Keystation 88 into a friend's 10.7.3 Mac, see what the results are. If it's not working there, it's a comparability issue that AVID/M-Audio needs to address. Maybe email their customer support and ask for beta drivers.

Plug a different keyboard model into your iMac. (seems you might have, was a little confused from your reply.) if it works, this seems to point to driver issues with the Keystation es88 again. Beta drivers or generic drivers, if available, may help get your 88key rocking again. If it doesn't work, which seems to be the case from your reply, you may want to take this to an Apple location to have them make sure your USB Host isn't shunting the request. You can also run hardware test at home.

Finally, try plugging your Keystation es88 into a PC. As long as Windows sees it and tries to install a generic MIDI keyboard driver, we can assume with near certainty the issue is the iMac and not the Keystation. If it doesn't recognize the Keystation, even as a generic unit, then it's probably some condensation inside the Keystation shorting out the USB power or the USB jack may have been bent and a contact is loose (fairly common with AVID's kit). Easy soldering job.
