What do you mean by not highlighted? And are you seeing this on the iPod itself or via iTunes? Just looking for a little more information as to what you are trying to do and what it is you are seeing exacty.

The 'grey' lists are via iTunes. The iPod works OK. I tried a 'reset' and entering the music in 'manual' but it wouldn't allow that.
Question: my first iPod was a 4GB and named 'Jim's iPod'. My new(er) 8GB gen 4 iPod somehow picked up that identity and I wonder if that has anything to do with my problem. TNX - Jim
So even after confirming that the Manually manage music and videos option was enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab, the music submenu underneath your iPod was still grayed out?

It shouldn't cause any problems.

Yes, but what I did was 'reset' which erased the music, switched to 'manual' but it wouldn't allow me to drag anything into the "Jim's iPod' which really stumped me. Your help/attention is greatly appreciated planb - Jim
The submenu titles themselves were not grayed out, just the lists under the titles. But see, I had deleted all the songs in the list (that were synced in from my iTunes library) then attempted, but not allowed, to manually drag songs into the submenu Music under 'Jim's iPod' title. Any help?
I was referring to the content that was in each submenu of content, such as music and movies. 🙂 Sorry for the confusion.
Does this music you are trying to drag to the iPod still play in iTunes? After verifying that the Manually manage music and videos option was ticked did you hit the Apply button in the lower right hand corner?
Are sure the tracks you are trying to drag on to your iPod are compatible with your particular model iPod Classic?

Yes, still play in iTunes.
Yes, did hit Apply
I think this is a Nano. It is 1 1/2 in. wide by 3 1/2 in long with a 2' (diagonal) screen. 8GB no cam. etc. Jim
This may be a bit of overkill, but have you tried restoring your iPod to factory defaults via iTunes and then configuring it for manual management again?
Restoring iPod to factory settings

Yes, I have tried every-which way to restore and after updating/syncing music menu (in the iPod, via iTunes) is gray and unmanageable. If the library of music is 'incompatible,' I think it wouldn't work with headphones and it does. Jim
Could you post a screen shot of your Summary tab in iTunes as well as a screen shot of the music currently on your iPod Classic via iTunes (i.e, select Music from under your Device's name in the left hand pane of iTunes. You may need to click the small black triangle next to the iPod to reveal the submenu).

Thaks for hangin in there.
I took photos of the screens but don't know how to get them to you except email. Jim
Also, I printed the gray screen list of music. The screen categories (L to R) are by Name, Time, Artist, Album
But the printout categories are (L to R) Name,Time, Album, Artist. And it sorted by artists.
The 'gray' screen doesn't allow me to pick a category. Only thing I can do is scroll. Jim
You should be able to insert them into one of these posts via the camera button you see on the editor's toolbar along the top to when replying to one of these posts in this thread.
Do you have the latest version of iTunes available for Mac OS X 10.4.11?

In the screen shot above, the Manually manage music and videos option is not selected. Enable that setting and then hit the Apply button in the lower right hand corner.
