Forced Apple ID security questions for App store - why?

So why now when I login to go through to the App Store I am faced with a forced "ENTER ADDITIONAL SECURITY QUESTIONS NOW in case my apple ID becomes insecure and needs to be restored" with NO option to OPT OUT of the update.


It would suggest that Apple has experienced issues and cannot keep my ID secure then !!!!! ????


So IMPOSED forced updates are the way to go? Well I can tell you now, I will NOT be giving any additonal information as you already have enough of mine to restore this account and since I cannot get past this situation of forced information I can no longer purchase any apps from your store.


Did you think about how many users that will effect when you imposed the worldwide update?


Apple, are you getting it yet?


Stop trying to p*ss your global users off with non opt out forced updates.


You already keep changeing your App store terms every 2 minutes which I am forced to accept and am totally fed up with doing. Thats called NAG, NAG, NAG, NAG annoying isnt it?


Let see if your brave enough to post this message and how many complaints have you already had?

Funny you should bring up Android Market. As an Android user for over three years I certainly have my issues with Android, but the Market (now Google Play) isn't one of them.


Dah•veed, the problem with your infamaltory and useless responses is that they do not help. Okay, we get it. In your eyes Apple can do no wrong and is supreme ruler of the universe. Whatever. I like many things about Apple products, but this is one area that they need to fix.


If anyone knows of a way to select personalized security questions, then please post a solution.


Assuming there is no easy way around this, I will likely store some nonsense answers in my 1Password database. Hopefully I will not need these answers too often.


If anyone else has any helpful ideas of how to deal with this until Apple addresses it, please post your ideas. Thanks.

I haven't said anywhere that Apple can do no wrong. I have issues with Apple's descisions at times. There is plenty to complain about at times. However, I agreed that I would not do so here in the Apple sponsored user to user support forums when I opened my account to participate here. I agreed to the Terms of Use and in doing so I agreed not to publicly use these forums to question Apple's business and product descisions. Period. So I keep my word.


I also know from being an Apple user over 25 years that Apple rarely backsteps on descisions that have been made. Just as you lot are here about the new security steps required, so where folks about Apple's security when their accounts were hacked and used.


If you want to suggest that Apple change the security questions to user chosen questions, by all means suggest that, through the proper channels, not by violating your agreement to the Terms of Use.

I agreed to the terms and conditions of the App store use when I bought and setup my iPhone. Now that I have a significant investment in it, and no other options available than the Apple app store, they change the terms and conditions to be what I deem completely unacceptable. Their "Security" questions are ambiguous and have no answer, and therefore must be written down somewhere, which since we don't want to carry around more stuff will be somewhere in the iPhone which it is supposed to be "protecting" in the first place. I could opt to no longer agree to the terms and not use the app store, but now my investment has no value. If Apple wants to refund the money for my investment in their platform then I won't be upset about it. Guess what, I'm upset about it.


AT&T will likely suffer also since I will switch to a completely new platform as soon as my contract terms are up for renewal without penalty. We'll see if Apple takes customer feedback into consideration and resolves this rediculous mistake in a timely manner.

AidanBW, the reason to not just 'go along with it' is that for some people this is introducing a vulnerability to their account, not making it more secure. And if you are not able to provide 3 answers you are comfortable with, but are forced to, or if you write them down but then lose piece of paper, then you could easily get locked out of your own account in future.


No matter what they do, many people see only increased risk with this so-called 'security' scheme.

Though you have merit you also have to look at it from the point of the company. If you have worked on IT you would know people put passwords even today that look at follow "12345678, applepie, iamgod, password" which is the problem. With questions people will put stuff that is easy to guess.


Sure you may not, but your not the other 20 million plus customers. Its an issue what is a company to do. Easy to whine but resolutions when dealing with such a large part of a population that are lawyers, doctors, teachers, not geeks or nerds. Not computer fixated or technology knoledgable to the level expert or at least having a scope of how things should be done. Your looking at everything thru your eyes, but in security you can't do that, you have to look thru the eyes of the common user.

For those with issues regarding remembering and security, you might look into Norton Identity Safe. It is cross platform; Mac, PC, Android and iOS. It is free for life if you get it in the next few months. It has a password generator, uses autofill, and has secure notes for things such as the iTunes security questions.

You expect us to remember where we were on January 1st, 2000? Heck, some people don't even remember what they did yesterday!


As for Dahveed's not-so-helpful comments, I must admit, I am quite insulted. How dare you accuse me of being fraud just because I cannot possibly answer these questions? The first group of questions asks about my first job and car and etc. Please note, I am not even out of High School yet. I haven't even attained my learners permit, nonetheless a car! As for my first teacher, how am I supposed to remember my first teachers name? I could hardly remember my 6th grade teachers name! First album? I never owned an album! The city I was first kissed? Man, I wish I had been kissed!


These questions were based of the fact that you assumed us all to be over the age of 21. If you actually read the daily-changing Terms of Service, you'll come across the following line: "This iTunes Service is available for individuals aged 13 years or older. If you are 13 or older but under the age of 18, you should review this Agreement with your parent or guardian to make sure that you and your parent or guardian understand it."


Did you notice the 13 years or older part? And yes, before you comment, I did have a legal guardian go over all this mumbo-jumbo legal garbage that we are forced to agree to everyday. I understand the policy, yes. But the simple fact is that these questions not only impose upon our private life, it is age discriminatory!


Tonight I wanted the simple pleasure of buying a television show to watch. Now here I am enraged on your rude behaviour to the people you said you'd help. Your actions are actually bidding customers away! All I want is the ability to purchase songs and TV shows without being forced to answer questions that supposedly "secure my account", when in reality, it does no such thing!


I'm not asking to rid the security questions for good, just make it less age discriminatory, or better yet- make it optional!

There are two choices here; secure your account or purchase somewhere else. Just as much as you rant about how much you don'y want to participate to keep the account safe, we also get the folks who rant when their account gets hacked. So Apple gets it coming and going and we get the rants. This isn't a place to rant, this is a tech support forum where folks are supposed to ask for help solving a technical issue.


You opened your account just today. Your first post is to come here and rant. You just agreed today not to rant when you opened the account.
