HDMI won't play audio through TV

When you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs.

The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. Check your TV manual though to see if it might have audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs on your TV.

i have a late 2011 macbook pro and a same year sony 1080p

it used to work fine (outputing audio thru tv speakers)

in time it stoped working, i got it fixed using the output settings

now it doesnt work even if the output settings are set to tv speakers

any ideas? please 😟

Here is what worked for me:

I bought the adapter that is HDMI female on one side and DVI (looks like a U) on the other end. I plugged in the adapter into the DVI port and plugged in the HDMI cable into the other end and then plugged that into the HDMI port on my 32" flat screen 720p.

I got a male male (green ends) audio cable and plugged it into the headset port on my MacBook white plastic laptop.The other end I plugged into the port on my TV. I selected HDMI on my TV.

It wasn't working for me at all. Or so I thought. I had to turn up the volume on the MacBook all the way and I had to turn the volume way up on the TV. With the volume turned up on both the sound was great. You can't hear it working with the sound on normal.

I also was stumped trying to get sound through the TV from my MBP and HDMI. After following the steps suggested, everything works! THANKS! So glad to have found this discussion. 😀
