"Enable Palm OS Syncing" option does not appear in isync 2.1

I am trying to enable isync to work with my palm os pda. I have installed Palm Desktop 4.2.1 and have isync 2.1.1. The isync conduit does not appear in the Palm's Hot Sync manager. When i go to the Devices menu in isync, the "Enable Palm OS Syncing" option does not even appear.

What do i do now?

Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

The iSync Palm Conduit will not appear in the HotSync configuration dialog until you have successfully enabled Palm synchronization using the Enable Palm OS Syncing… option, which you obviously cannot do at this point, as it does not appear under the Devices menu.

That's usually indicative of a corrupted installation of iSync 2. What steps did you perform to get to this point? For example, installed Mac OS X 10.4 [which installed iSync 2] then applied the iSync 2.1 update, or the Mac OS X 10.4.5 update, and so on.

One thing that you could do is to reinstall Mac OS X 10.4.5 using the Combo update—rather than the Delta update—downloadable installer. [The Software Update mechanism operates essentially like the Delta update installer, and won't correct a problem like this.]

Combo updaters are much larger packages than their Delta equivalents: about 125 megabytes versus 16 megabytes or so, in this instance.

The Mac OS X 10.4.5 Combo update package can be downloaded here:

I'm having the same problem with iSync 1.5. Hot Sync Mgr 3.2.1, iCal 1.5.5, iSync Palm Conduit 1.2, Palm Desktop 4.22.
I followed all the instructions fron iSync help when I open Hot Sync Mgr. choose HotSync > Conduit Settings. In the Conduit settings window the iSync Conduit icon box is gray meaning it's diabled or not available until I click on something in the list like Address book, than the Conduit setting icon box is active, I double click but never see message to enable device. I reloaded all the software but the problem remains the same.

In your particular situation—with Mac OS X 10.3.9 and iSync 1.5—you should simply double-click on the iSync Palm Conduit [listed simply as iSync Conduit in the HotSync configuration dialog] and check the option to Enable iSync for this Palm device.

When you next launch iSync, your device will appear in it's main window.

It worries me slightly that you mention the Palm Desktop 4.2.2… Are you using either a Palm T|X or Z22 handheld? Those are the only devices for which that particular version of the Palm Desktop should be installed.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, it still does not work 😟 Downloaded the file from the url that you gave and ran it and restarted. The iSync app has been updated, but still has same problem. It also won't let you add a device (nothing happens when you select that item from the menu).

I wonder if I should do some kind of special uninstal of the isync first?

You can certainly try. Send me a message offline and I will reply with a copy of iSync Uninstall, a utility which is intended to properly and completely remove iSync.

You'll then have to extract and install iSync using Pacifist, and once again run the Combo updater to restore it to version 2.1.1. Whatever you do, don't start removing components manually, because you will only create additional problems by doing so. About one in five or so users who attempt to use the utility receive an error message, and it will not run. I cannot explain why, as it has always work for me and still does under Mac OS X 10.4.5 and with iSync 2.1.1.

OK - I'll send you an email.

Also wondering:
- Is there a free way to install isync from the 10.4 install disks? Seem to remember somebody in the forums (of course can't find it again) saying that there was.
- Could it be a problem with the pda (I have an older one: Visor Edge, so don't have the latest Palm OS on it) or just a mac problem as the conduit should appear no matter what pda i have.

thanks!

Yes, you'll need to use Pacifist to extract and install the application from your original Mac OS X 10.4 Install or Upgrade DVD. You can find it here:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/pacifist.html

You can download and use it at no charge, but I would encourage you to purchase it. It's a great utility!

Your Visor Edge uses Palm OS 3.5.2H2 and Palm recommends the use of Palm Desktop 4 with it, which you can download from here:

If I may piggyback on this last interchange, I'm not seeing my palm appear in the isync window and have checked Enable iSync under the HotSync conduit settings on the Palm desktop app side. Using Palm Desktop 4.0 and Hotsync 3.0.0 and iSync 1.5 on 10.3.9. This is a problem for both a Kyocera 7135 and a Palm m500 that successfully hotsync with the palm desktop app.

Would greatly appreciate your help in resolving.

And, you also have the iSync Palm Conduit 1.2 installed, correct? It is that conduit that you configured with the HotSync menu in the Palm Desktop, right?

Under Mac OS X 10.3.9, if you have iSync 1.5 and the iSync Palm Conduit 1.2 installed and you have used the HotSync menu of the Palm Desktop or the HotSync Manager to configure the conduit [from the perspective of the HotSync Manager] by checking the option to Enable iSync for this Palm device, then it should appear in the main window of iSync when you next launch that application. If it does not, I would suspect that you have a permissions problem, possibly.

Thanks, Michael. Took me a couple of reads to find that I needed v1.2 of the palm isync conduit, which I downloaded after searching in support. I had been using v1.0, which was the version provided on iDisk's apple software downloads. Syncing to Palm is working fine, but I'm confused about how my desktop Palm software will behave. Any reference material you can recommend? Many thanks again. -.Mark

Your Palm Desktop package can remain on your machine, but no data will be added to, changed on or deleted from it, as you're now using iSync to synchronize with iCal and the Address Book instead.

It is not possible to simultaneously synchronize the same data type—contacts, for example—with more than one synchronization conduit. If you choose iSync [and therefore the iSync Palm Conduit] you cannot also synchronize contact data using the Entourage conduit or the Palm Contacts conduit at the same time.
