OK, First thank you guys for getting back to me so quick. I am hoping to be able to solve this issue soon because I start working from home next week.

My work is trying out us working from home. They use Windows. I have the IP address for the server, once on the server I connect to my system at my desk. I can do this now on my desk top via vmWindows and its all fine. Since it is summer I would like to be able to work outside. Hence I need to set up my Mac laptop to connect to windows. I don't want to run vm on the laptop because it will slow it to a crawl.

" Exactly what do you mean by "remote into work"? ": I need to go from my lap top in my back yard to my desktop at my desk in the office. Do all the exact same things only in my back yard not in an office. Hope that helped answer the question.

I don't need to print. I need to be looking at the screen using and seeing exactly what I would be using and seeing if I were at my desk

But you haven't told us how your work's external network is setup? I don't know of any company that would simply let you remote in without an authenticated secure connection. Do they use a VPN? If so, what kind? Does it require it's own client software?

Your question should first be directed toward your network administrators to see what you need to make a connection from outside the network.

Simple fact is you should of bought a PC for this purpose.

Why?

What were you thinking?

That a Mac would be so much nicer?

My work is going to let me work from home so I'll buy computer that I have to do special stuff to and that my work environment doesn't support to work from home.

Mac users never get any IT support. Lucily, we don't need it.

In a worst case scenario, the original poster could just run Windows under Parallels. I used to work from my home machine and connect to an all Windows network. The only time I actually had to log in to Windows was to change my Windows password every 90 days.

That setup worked quite well for everyone. Now I connect to work with a new 15" MacBook Pro that they bought for me. The only downside is that it still runs Snow Leopard.

Real bright.

Good Luck.

There is no difference, use MS RDC for Mac and the OP's Office Windows machine will appear on his Mac desktop, exactly as if he was running a Windows machine. The similarity is such that you can take the RDC connector file from a Windows installation and use it with RDC on a Mac.

Ok you guys are way over thinking this. The IT guy at work knows nothing about Macs. Like I said I have a mac desktop and I vm in no proble. What was I thinking? you asked. This is what I was thinking I don't want to work with a crap windows I have romted in to other jobs on a windows and it took for ever, they are not fast at all. I love my mac it is fast and does what I want it to when I want I don't wait.

I am sure that there is some thing. I dont want to download MS office I don't need it, it is on the work computer. I am sure there is a way to open a port on my home router and then enter the work IP address in. The key here is I set my desk top vm up already. Now I would like to do the lap top with OUT VM I don't want the drag.

thank you all for the ideas.

In order to remote in you will need 2 things, access (usually via a VPN) and a Remote Desktop Connector (RDC) which you can download for free from the link I provided.

For the VPN you will need remote credentials from your IT dept, it is not relevant whether you use a Mac or a Windows PC, the settings are identical)

For the RDC you will need either your office computers name or its IP address, these you can obtain without help from IT.

Remind me again, what is the problem?
