Can't iMove '11 project file and Events to another Mac

Hello all.

I have been working on an iMovie '11 project for weeks on a Macbook Pro and, after filling up my HDD, want to move to a, newer larger Macbook Pro. All the source material of the project have been from my video/photographic camera why I first import as Events in iPhoto (so I see the "iPhoto Videos" Event Library in iMovie and work that way).

Problem is, when I attach an external HDD (properly formatted) to my older Macbook and then try to copy or move the project file to it, it only copies the project file - it does NOT come up with the prompt asking whether I wish to copy the project file alone or the associated Events also!! This is baffling - I have tried everything from restarting, ensuring the HDD is formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), etc. The only possible "hurdle" I can see is that I only have 10G free on my Macbook HDD from (from which I want to copy) but this does not explain why the prompt does not appear.

The target external HDD is empty so that is not an issue either.

Any ideas?

AAAARRRRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

Unfortunately I had my hopes up high: I THOUGHT it worked but due to all the commotion I was looking at my original Mac!!!

Unfortunately the question remains: how do I copy a iMovie project file to a new Mac whilst maintaining the Events, which are embedded from iPhoto (see previous posts for a better version of the question).

I think this is simply an non-feature from Apple.

Bengt, or someone, please do an experiemnt for me: Create a video from, say a camera, and import it into iPhoto. Then create an iMovie project and use a few seconds of that footage (you will see the iPhoto tab from within iMovie and the Event that appears from there - use that, dont import the video into iMovie - simply use the iPhoto link in that way). THEN TRY TO MOVE/COPY that project onto another drive/Mac. My bet is that when you do, it will NOT come up with the prompt asking whetehre u want the Events files copied too. So how on earth is this done??????

I am soooooo peeved becuase I urgently need to free up my old Mac - it is my work laptop and I am in a jam here!!!!

Been reading this thread as I am in a similar, albeit less critical, situation. I was running our of space on my SSD, so I had a 500g hard drive installed to replace the optical drive and moved itunes, iphoto and imovie libraries over. Tons of space open everything is great. HOWEVER, in iMovie events there is that darned "iphoto videos" that I cannot move to my new wide open 500g HD. Every other movie and project copied perfectly.

So did you ever find a solution? Most of my videos come from our iphones and you can't even delete those from imovie.

One trick I found was that when I trashed a movie from iphoto, then moved it from the trash to desktop, then imported that to imovie, I could delete it. But I really don't want to do that everytime I import a movie.

Hope you got your fixed and I welcome any feedback/advice.

Thanks!

Agreed, that it seems one cannot MOVE "iphoto videos" events to another hard drive. However, I believe one can COPY the "iphoto videos" from the event library on the hard drive to a different hard drive. Perhaps that will help your situation..

My situation is a bit different but highly related: To free up internal hard drive space on my iMac, I've moved all iMovie projects and events to a new external USB-connected hard drive...all events except the iPhoto Videos; they won't move. I'm thinking I should simply leave them on the internal hard drive, rather than COPY them to the external drive and then have to deal with duplicate video clips. Any advise would be appreciated.

I started having the same problem as Driggs (April 2012) (could not move Project and Events to an external drive shown in Event Library; never got popup choice), and tried your suggestions to trash pref file. When I restrated iMovie, I now could see both drives in the Project Window, and could move projects there between drives (which you said was ok in another post.)

But in the Event Library view of the External Drive, I see only some of my events that I moved there long ago and none of the events associated with today's Project moves. These recent events are still on the main HD under iPhoto videos. Should I be trying to move them as well? Or are the Projects self-contained with the edited portion of the Event videos and I don't need the original Events anymore (assuming no future re-editing requirements)?

The reason I'm hesitant to delete them is I have some old projects that have No Source, but that may be due to attempted moves within Finder years ago, before I saw all your (and others') warnings to do so only within iMovie.

sorry, my intent was not quite the same as Driggs'. I'm moving videos to an external hard drive (not a new Mac) because I'm running out of space on the internal drive.

1. Does your reply mean that keeping the original Events from which one created a Project is essential as the Projects link to them rather than copying them into the Project? (surprising given how large the Project files are!). 2. If so, your reply indicates that I have to move my iPhoto Library to the external drive as well in order for it to be complete/self-contained (in case of internal hard drive failure.)

3. I actually have a separate iPhoto Library already on that external drive (for off-loading old photos as well) so can I just move the videos into that? Via Finder or must I Export from the original iPhoto Library on the internal drive? Thanks.

@Driggs, I see you have already moved your iPhoto Library over, but there is another one there too.

I would suggest that you create a new user account on the new Mac for these iPhoto events/Projects.

Move you old iPhoto Library to this new user account on the new Mac. Also move the Projects there.

If you used iTunes music, move the iTunes Library there too. Then your Projects should work.
