Wireless Causing Kernel Panics?

I've been battling random kernel panics since I got my MB. I figured it was my 3rd party RAM but memtest after memtest turned up nothing. I swapped chips, ran tests, everything and still get on average one per day. I finally figured out that OSX logs the panics and here is what every one in the log says:

Thu Feb 23 18:29:02 2006
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0019CACE): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault), registers:

Down in the backtrace I see this on every one:

invalid frame pointer 0x0
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)@0x3bb4b000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)@0x3ad88000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)@0x34cf3000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)@0x3aee0000

It looks like it's the Atheros driver. I use WPA-PSK on my wireless. Anyone else having problems?

So I have been battling this problem with Apple Support and Geniuses at the Stores and after 4 days of erase and installs, archive installs, test user accounts, and lots of phone time and frustration I am getting to DOA this MBP for a new one. If you are having this problem I suggest calling them as soon as possible and working through it as quickly as possible.

me too -- i just had mine deemed DOA and a new one will be arriving shortly. as a first time mac user, i am very disappointed because i LOVE this machine -- other than this wireless issue.

on a side note, they have begun the return and replace process with my week 20 MBP, but have charged me just under six dollars extra for the new one that will be arriving next week -- any obvious reason for this or are they just trying to squeeze another buck out of me???

I too am having the exact same problem as described in this post.
I first encountered the issue during the setup/registration of the machine......I rebooted but had the same issue over and over again.
So I called AppleCare Support and explained to them that I was happy to go through some steps to try and fix the problem.....But nothing was successful, I even reinstalled the OS.

So I eventually ended up asked for an exchange of the machine, which they were happy to do and they offered me priority shipping too.....So hopefully it will be a bit quicker this time.

It's sad that this problem has come about as I'd never even seen a kernel panic on a Mac before, all my other machines have been so excellent.
But hopefully the new machine I recieve will be just as good as the rest......fingers crossed!

p.s. I am interested to know whether this is a hardware or software fault, as it seems quite a lot of people are being effected, atleast in this thread!

Well I am awaiting the replacment MBP it just shipped from china. I will have to say I do not expect it to be any better than the one I returned. But I have to try and keep my fingers crossedI personally think it is related to the Intel-logic board combination. I do not think it is software related, therefor I mentioned earlier that a software fix is highly unlikly.

i also dont think that a software fix is going to come along. i spent hours with tech support doing everything possible to my MBP and he said that it had to be a hardware issue. i can only hope that it is a "random" hardware issue and that i will be lucky enough to get a "good" one this time. i was very upset too, because other than the kernel panics, my MBP was not too hot and had a whine that could only be heard if i shoved me head against the speakers! good luck to you with your newest model!

Anyone else buy from Amazon? I'm just wondering what the deal is with their returns. I read something about a restocking fee of 15% for computers, but I'm not sure if that goes for defective products.

Apple Care told me that since I bought from Amazon, Apple would only repair, not replace my machine. I don't care who sold it to me, but given that I paid for a DOA machine, I expect a brand new replacement, not some repair job that may or may not fix the issue and/or create others.

I have a 4 day old MBP 2.0Ghz (week 20) which has been having kernel panics since day one. Only happens when downloading via wireless. Doesn't happen when on ethernet. It happens on my home and work network so it's definitely the machine. I have a support call in at the moment, and sent them my panic logs, but they say it will take a few days before they can get back to me as they are 'very busy'. If I don't get an encouraging response it's going back under the 7-day return unwanted option. Shame really - it's quiet and cool otherwise.

I'll add another "me too". I got my new MBP 15 Friday, and over the last two days I have had two dozen kernel panics while installing software. Traffic over traditional ethernet is no problem -- all the panics are over the 802.11 connection to my Airport.

I'll try calling Apple tomorrow or Monday. I hope they have had enough complaints by now not to give me the run-around. I've owned over 20 Macs over the last 20 years, and I hate it when they go through the newbie..."Now reboot holding down the shift key" nonsense....
