Wireless Causing Kernel Panics?

I've been battling random kernel panics since I got my MB. I figured it was my 3rd party RAM but memtest after memtest turned up nothing. I swapped chips, ran tests, everything and still get on average one per day. I finally figured out that OSX logs the panics and here is what every one in the log says:

Thu Feb 23 18:29:02 2006
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0019CACE): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault), registers:

Down in the backtrace I see this on every one:

invalid frame pointer 0x0
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)@0x3bb4b000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)@0x3ad88000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)@0x34cf3000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)@0x3aee0000

It looks like it's the Atheros driver. I use WPA-PSK on my wireless. Anyone else having problems?

Well, it's not just Macbooks or MBP's. I have a G5 dual tower I bought last November, and it's been running fine. The about two weeks ago (after the 10.4.6 update) I keep getting kernel panics. First started with the gray screen, no log. Then not waking from sleep, and then not waking and the fans coming on full blast. The a couple days ago I got the log screen after startup. So I unplugged all my usb stuff except my keyboard and USB bluetooth dongle. Ran a hardware test..nothing. Still getting them. Reinstalled (archive and install) the OS from the original system disk. It seemed to work fine until I installed the driver for my wacom bluetooth tablet (though I hadn't restarted yet). Then another panic. Hadn't thought about the airport issue though. Anyway, it's happening to other machines as well.
Tried resetting the PRam, as well as the PMU. Haven't run MacJanitor in a long time though (forgot I even had it). This is really annoying.

Just thought it was interesting seeing this thread. I do have a USB bluetooth dongle (D-Link) instead of a bluetooth card (Apple store was all out...). The mac had been running like a top until a few weeks ago, then kernel panics all the time. If the dongle trick doesn't do it, then pulling out the memory is next.

This is becoming a real pain the rear.

Just to throw in my $.02, my MacBook started with the Kernel panics moments after the first boot. I've replicated the problem a dozen times for the AppleCare folk, all by attempting downloads over WiFi. After doing every fix-it trick in they book, they finally deemed it to be a faulty logic card.

One thing I'm curious about - it seems to happen over CERTAIN WiFi points. My home Airport Express works OK, as did the signal at an Apple Store. But at my office or at a buddies place, the panic hits every time a download gets going. Anyone else experiencing it as a hit and miss on non-Apple routers?

Everything else about it rocks by the way. I'm not discouraged. Best Apple hardware yet.

same issue on my gf's 2 day old week 20(i think) 2.0. Randomly crashes though for me with on wifi. i jus tput 1 and 1 together wiht your guys help - noticed ONLY does it while i'm connected to an ap. Though, it does it when it wants while connected, not only dling.. waking from sleep and so on also. it had already been diagnosed with a lb problem, the whine, so the place had the logicboard on order for it already. Hopefully this new one will fix my wifi problems as i too, need it. im around alot in my new house, its only plugged in while in the office which im rarely working in...

will let you guys know if my new logicboard fixes my issue! thx and gl

I started getting the Kernel Panics after replacing the main board due to sudden power-offs, monitor-whine and erratic WLAN (does not work after re-booting, but it works if I disconnect and then re-connect).

I never had a single Kernel Panic before getting the new main board.

I use an US Robotics WLAN-router at work and a 3Com-router at home. My MacBook Pro panics at both locations, usually about three times a day. Today I have been running via ethernet with Airport Turned Off (via the status-drop-down in the Apple Menu bar) and so far no panics. This has never occurred to me until now.

If the Airport card is not located on the main board, then the problem must be related to the main-board since I still have my original Airport card but a replaced mainboard and the Kernel Panics started after replacing the main board.

I went back to Apple with the computer because of the Sudden Power-offs. They are gone, and instead I suffer from Kernel Panics.

Since I have already posted my panic.logs in a separate post I am not including them here. For the logs and my whole sad story please see my other post "Kernel Panic Analysis": http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=496837&tstart=0

i had the same problem. when mine showed up, it crashed durring registration and probably 15 or so times the first few days. apple also declared a bad logic board. i did not want to settle for a repair when it isn't a week old... so, they're sending me a new one.

send it back if you're in the 14 day return period, there's no need to deal with a d.o.a. macbook. the rma was easy to obtain by calling their 800 number.

just wondering. does any one know if I can return
the mac book pro I purchased online to an actual
apple store?

Yes you can, but before you do it you should call Apple Support in your country and file a ticket so that you get a case number. Apple Support will then let you choose an Apple Service Provider of your choice. It may be an Apple Store or a certified reseller. It is up to you. The only limitation is that the place needs to be a service provider and not just a store. Apple Support will tell you which Apple Stores are eligible.

well, I asked apple support if that was possible they said no, but for these two reasons. Mine a glossy screen which is not available at the store, also because they want to keep inventory seperate. However I think that information is not correct, because i took the MBP to the store to see if they can give it another shot at figuring out the problem, they offered to exchange it but they didnt have a glossy screen one, so I had to sent mine back to apple
