Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How will pages share docs on iCloud after iWork is discontinued?

Does this mean the money I paid for the pages app was wasted and pages no longer works after July?

Should I stop using pages now and migrate to new sharing solution?

I'm trying to work here. Please tell me if I am wasting my time on pages or if pages will support iCloud sharing after iWork is discontinued.

I don't have time to waste using pages anymore if it is going to be discontinued when iWork is discontinued.

So you have discovered that when 2 things have different names they usually are different.

Whilst Apple may not have clarified what they are doing (not unusual these days) the technical reason for having to get your material off iWork.com and put it back up on iCloud is that they are 2 entirely different places and iWork.com never got traction as far as I know and is now becoming obsolete.

You could suggest to Apple that they provide a migration tool that automates the task for you:

Menu > Pages > Provide Pages Feedback

You are not "most people". You are the only person I know to have confused the two.

Apple has a webpage explaining iWork.com and what do you think the .com is for on the end of the name?

You seem to be familiar enough with the Internet to have got here and surely must have noticed that .com pertains to a .com company Internet address.

I can tell the difference between a dog and a dog kennel. There is a limit to just how much anybody can explain anything when the possible misinterpretations and confusions are infinite.

You did your best to make it hard to determine what the real problem was by freely alternating the terms iWork which is a program running on your Mac or iDevice and iWork.com which is an address on the Internet storing your iWork files.

If you had used iWork with iWork.com I would have thought there would have been endless clues the two were not the same. Starting with the fact you had to opt in for iWork.com.

I'm hoping this is a clue that Mountain Lion upgrade will be free. I'm sure there are concerns with the announcement that iWork.com is to be discontinued. With Mountain Lion iWork.com won't be needed. But if there is a fee for the upgrade, the negative feedback won't be worth taking something that is working away from us if we don't choose to upgrade.

I also have a hunch that they might have automatic integration planned for those who upgrade in time. But they gave due diligence by giving notice that iWork will be discontinued for those who don't upgrade, or in case things don't go smoothly. Best to be safe and make sure you have local copies of files on iWork.com.

iCloud only syncs docs among your devices. So far there is no indication it will have anything which corresponds to the part of iWork.com beta which provides a way to share iWork docs via a web browser with invited viewers who can add comments and notes. So for people who used that feature, there will be no Apple replacement.

But the fact that Apple never brought this further than "beta" status tells me they care very little about it.

I am sure Mountain Lion will not be free.

Why do you say iWork will be discontinued? Have you caught the sd6 disease or are you sd6 in disguise?

Of more concern than whether iWork.com is to be discontinued is the proprietry format of .pages.

Should Apple ever get bored with Pages on the Mac, it will be very hard to access all your documents.

If you wish to pester Apple, get them to use open document format.

On Apple's site under the Mountain Lion preview it says that iCloud will sync the documents on all devices, including the Mac. Edit one place, you have it on all devices.

One concern I have is that it seems quite easy to accidently change something in Pages, for example, on my phone. When I intend to drag to scroll it often selects an object and moves it. The way it was, any changes made on the iOS devices weren't made final for the Mac, which would be my main device for those documents. Downloading the file from iWork.com is the decision to accept any changes. So I am somewhat concerned that accidental changes on the iOS device will end up replacing what was done on the Mac. Perhaps they have thought about this and the iOS device changes end up being a version, the original remaining available.

I understand the concern of people who are using a particular feature or service of Apple's which is now being taken away.

Trouble is that I have been using Macs for so long I have come to expect the inevitable.

Apple has an unfortunate short attention span and will quickly go off with a new fun idea and abandon the old stuff that it has got bored with.

I don't always get it right but I can almost smell Apple's abandonware before it even thinks of abandoning it.

That is why I never bothered with iWork.com and am wary of iCloud.

If the first paragraph under iCloud doesn't make it clear, under the graphic click on the "Documents in the Cloud" and the graphic will change to a pages document illustrated on an iPad, a Mac, and an iPhone. It is the same version at the same time. Either this is making it clear, or it is deceiving.

Right, I too use Pages in combination with the now ending iWork.com, which is used solely for the distribution work which often, has been created from scratch on the iPad (reports done on flights etc)...

The replacement service (iCloud) is really offering nothing the same as I see it, the last thing I want to be able to do is sync between my own devices - I can do that very easily myself.... what we need to be able to do is to send documents to others...

Why not share via email you ask? Well, we have a shard iPad and so adding any one person's email account to the device itself is out of the picture, and no logon sessions for iPad unfortunately (yet?) On this note, iWork you CAN login/logout from, so different users of the iPad can a) send from their own addresses & b) Use their own address books (iWork is syncing nicely with our company servers somehow....

Basically it seems that apple is taking away the only real way for us to do this, without providing a replacement service...and as far as I can see this is the only way we have of doing it....

Dropbox is out of the question for us I think as it limits our access to files at work (it is prohibited at work), so any 'links' sent to it to external customers, may be ok, but not to ourselves - not really good enough again....

Peter you're a smarmy b*&(*rd aren't you....

From what I understand, on each device, and on the Mac, you can log into iCloud using any Apple ID. So I am thinking that if you do all work with your ID, then iCloud, then your work, addressbook, etc. should be available when the devices is logged in on that ID. Others can use other ID's. This, it seems, shoudl be equivilant to different users logging in on other systems. At least the things stored on iCloud. I don't know if logging with different ID's would do the same with things stored locally.

Ok unfortunately you have misunderstood me. Syncing between iDevices is pretty much the only thing I am not bothered about doing...

This is what i want:

Say for example we have one iPad, no macs/pcs and no iphones. All I want to do now really is be able to send a document I created in pages on iOS (iPad) to other people. I can't use the email account for this as it is a shared iPad and there is no way to require password input for email acocunts.

Currently I use iWork.com, which is setup with my work email address, this means, that when I hit "share with iWork" in Pages (on iOS) it will send (a link) to the document I have created, which appears to have originated from my work email address (to the recipient). This, as far as I'm aware, is being removed with no alternative procedure available.

We use iWork.com as Pages has the ability to login and logout of different iWork.com accounts and so the device can sucessfully be shared between more than one person....

Quite the conundrum...

Any help appreciated,

and thanks for trying justin

I think your understanding is correct, there is no indication Apple plans to offer this any more.

Have you had a look at whether Googledocs, which I think now has some support for .pages format, can do something similar for you?
