Not able to update Itunes on Macbook

I am havent been able to update to the latest Itunes for my Macbook. I go through the software updates, and select Itunes to update it. It gets almost all the way through and then says there has been an error and wasnt able to download... Because of this, I am unable to download any shows/movies on my Itunes.

Any idea what I can do?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I am now in safe boot mode on my computer, however now its not letting me connect to the internet in this mode... I am located in Australia at the moment and we have a "toggle" that we have to put in the USB outlet in order to use the internet. Its basically like dial up. Is there some way to allow internet connection in the safe boot modem? I'm writing from my phone. Thanks!

That's correct. The safe boot was just to do the disk verify/repair, since you didn't have the proper DVD. And no, there are a number of things you can't do in that mode.

Reboot normally.

If you still can't download, the problem is with Safari, or your internet connection, not the directory on your HD.

I ended up creating a wi-fi hotspot on my cell phone which I was able to use for my computer. In the safe boot mode I was able to update Itunes and Security so I am good to go, at least for now... So in the future, will I always have to download in safe boot mode? what is going on with my general sign in that isnt letting me? Thanks Pondini and Frank for all your help. I really appreciate it.
