I postulate that it was because Telestream is not widely known while Microsoft is well known. If I had a choice between a site that claims to be the developer's site versus one that is well known and trusted, I'd choose the well known and trusted. In this particular case your link does point to the developer's site, though.

Another possibility is that wmv = Microsoft so it makes sense to get the component from Microsoft.

I'd be glad to give you the points for solving the question if there was a mechanism to do so. Your post wasn't there when I started writing mine or I would have kept quiet.

It wasn't the points. I really was curious about the decision making process here. The problem with downloading from a site which caches copies of third party software (and I checked the microsoft download is from the microsoft site) is that the original author can update their software meaning you are depending on an intermediate to stay in sync. In this case they are in sync but you can't be sure unless you check. By downloading directly from the author's site or macupdate.com, which tracks the sites and points to the author's download link, you can be sure you are always getting the current versions.

But the point you make (no pun intended) are valid.
