I'm sure everyone has seen this thread
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=374397&tstart=0 about the 'whine' that appears to be prevelant on the new MacBook Pros. I've been on the fence of ordering one since they've been anounced and was ready to order one this morning until I saw this thread and others like it reporting problems. I'm very sensitive to most electronic hums or 'whines' and fear that if my MacBook has this problem I won't be able to use it at all. I know that only people that have problems normally post on these forums but I'm curious as to how many people have either bought one and had no issues at all with it, or had one with the 'whine' that has since been repaired. Thanks to anyone that responds.

To be honest, the only 'whine' I can hear comes from people with the unrealistic expectation of a computer that makes zero noise. Compare it to any non-apple laptop and be smug.
There are two ways to solve this problem:
download the mirror widget or Download QuietMBP 1.1. Good luck.

mine has the whine issue and i talked to th guys at the genius bar....apparently this issue only occurs with the earlier models of mac books. he suggested that i exchange or return mine and get one that has a serial number which starts at W863 or higher those don't have the issue
Mine had whine for 2-3 weeks. Now it's gone - all of sudden. I have no idea how this happen - I was using it for 2-3 hours on battery (don't remember, but I think it was silent by that time) and the next day it stopped whining 😉
here is a fix for the whine
ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/ToolChest/Testing_-_Debugging/Performance_tools/CHUD4.3.2.dmg
#1 install it
#2 go into the system preferences and choose processor.
#3 check box to show control in menu bar (you now have a processor in the menu bar)
#4 then whenever you hear the whine switch to "Single CPU".
#5 if you want more speed turn back on "Dual CPU".
fixed my noise problem.

It's a workaround but its an unacceptable workaround. You paid so you could use the machine at full speed all the time. You shouldn't have to halve the performance just to force the machine to work properly.
And yes they do whine bad! My 1st 2ghz whined so loud when using the battery. Plugging it in stopped the whine 100%. But using battery gave me a headache. returned for the 2.16 yesterday. 1st one had defective superdrive. 3rd one got last night has slight whine with battery use but I can live with it. Its MUCH quieter than the 2ghz I had.
my wifes powerbook 12" is silent as a mouse. No whine, no buzz, nothing. So a silent notebook can be made!
The whine is not noticeable to everyone.
My coworker does not hear it. It is very high-pitched.
It changes slightly (it seems) when I pull the power adapter out, slightly lower frequency and a bit less loud.
As with all those buzzing noises that we all hear but of which we aren't conscious, the mind adapts to it and it disappears more or less.
It is annoying though when you focus on it, like now.
So WHAT is it? Super-sonic marketing? Pro-Israeli Intel mindmessages?

But usually the whine only happens when you are NOT running the machine at full capacity. Mine only whines when I am doing practically nothing with it. I use the CHUD tools and have a processor menu to turn off the second core when it is quiet enough for me to notice the whine.
I wonder how it is possible to get one that does not whine?
How many times will Apple replace one that does whine?
Can you get all your money back after n tries?
I thought the 17" model may be better but there are reports of these whining now!
A problem is that the whine may not occur for 15 to 30 days of normal use. Can it be exchanged at that point?
The most likely explanation is that the switching power supply operates (or has subharmonics) in the audible range. This requires a redesign or use of more "damped" components that will not readily vibrate. The latter offers the most likely explanation where some of the components "loosen up" after use and/or thermal cycling. I doubt if any of this is controleld by microcode. Normally standard designs are used for power suppleis that are both cost efffective and that do not have these issues. Changngg to more miniaturized or less conservative components for a laptop may introduce these problems in an otherwise good design.
The only soultion i see to getting a decent Apple laptop at the moment is the OS86 project. I am also hoping there will be a release of VMWare that will faciliate concurrent OS support with the OS86 solution.

Pretty good, since I'm a student and paid £1600 for the **** thing.
I kinda want the product i paid for and i just can't afford to be complacent on a student budget, and well, its my 4th replacement, and its no-where near quiet.
So i'll be holding my breath for a good while yet mate!
lol.

Hello,
The mine does not have any rare sound meanwhile is plug with the AC adapter. But if it is disconnected from it, starts a very low whine.
I have a new MBP 2.16 MHz 15"
MacBook Pro 15 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2.16 GHz 1 Gb RAM
