Can't Open Some PDFs

I'd be very surprised if that fixes the problem and I still cannot find out whether it is a browser problem or a pdf reader problem.

Try it and see - I use Adobe Acrobat Pro X a couple of hours a day and that's what solved my problem of viewing pdf files in Firefox. A very simple fix for, what can be, a very frustrating problem.

The last post indicated a problem in Firefox, so that's the question I'm answering at this point.

See my post on Firefox. If you are not running it in 32-bit mode, all you will get is a blank screen.

I can run Firefox in 64 bit and can open any .pdf online (I use preview, not a fan of Adobe Reader). Find no such problems. Not sure if I'm understanding what you are geting at here.

Can Preview open pdf files directly into a new window in Firefox? What plug-in are you using in Firefox?

There's Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-In, Version 10.1.3, which is the official Adobe plug-in that requires running in 32-bit mode and then there is the PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4 which will, I believe, work in 64-bit mode. The adobe plug-in is much more useful, allowing printing pdf files from web pages with links intact, etc. I'd be really surprised if you were running the new Acrobat plug-in in 64-bit mode but please let me know if you are: it's a frequent topic in the Adobe Acrobat forums.

But I'm not familiar with any Preview plug-ins that let you view a pdf file without saving and opening them.

AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin contains both i386 and x86_64 code, in other words it has code that runs on both 32 and 64-bit architecures and I would find it hard to believe that it would be made a fat binary if it wasn't going to support 64-bit architectures.

You can keep sticking to your story and I will stick to mine. This problem has nothing to do with a browser running in 32 vs. 64 bit.

By the way if you go to this adobe page, it explicitly says "Native 64-bit support" which is consistent with the architectures I am seeing in the plugin code files.

And all this is still just an academic exercise since we still don't know what the OP is having problems with -- browser(s) to pdf readers.

I have no acrobat plugins at all in Firefox, therefore if I open an online .pdf it simply asks Open In Preview? I hit yes and it opens in a seperate window which I can read or save or send on. There is no sign of any individual plug-in for Preview. I have Acrobat Pro X installed on my Mac, but not reader. I also rarely ever use Firefox, a blt chunky and slow for me compared to Safari and I also use Preview as my default reader fr pdf docs if that is of any help to you, and also run all apps in 64 bit mode.

I don't mean to get in an argument, really, but I know that the Adobe plug-in will only display pdfs in a browser window in Firefox in 32-bit mode. I just tried it again - in 64-bit mode, the document downloads and opens in Acrobat Pro X (my default app for pdf's) and in 32-bit mode, it opens a pdf in a browser window. Again, have you tried this with Firefox? As I said, it's a frequent discussion on the Adobe Acrobat forums and is the only recommended solution from the 'experts' (I'm just a 'contributor' there).

If you are able to use the Adobe plug-in in Firefox in 64-bit mode, PLEASE let me know.

The Adobe plug-in works just fine with Safari running in 64-bit mode. It seems to be a Firefox problem that I hope will be ironed out in future updates as, for some reason, I just love Firefox!

I can see that you love Firefox and prefer Adobe reader, but until we know what the OP is using and if they require more help, then arguing amongst ourselves over prefered options will not aid anybody nor solve the OP's question.
