I setup Gmail as my default email and everything works fine except it doesn't show my contacts when I compose an email. To get around this I also added my yahoo account and in the mail settings under my yahoo account I unchecked all the boxes except my contacts. Now when I compose a Gmail email it will show my contacts. My question is why doesn't my contacts show up with just having my Gmail account setup? Do I have to leave it this way for it to work correctly?

If you can see your GMail folders, they'll populate once you select them (they won't Push, unless you select them to). Once you select a folder it may take a bit of time for the content to download, but it should proceed just fine.
Just a word of caution when using GMail as an Exchange account: By default, messages that you delete will be Archived to your "All Mail" category, not sent to Trash. If you want to change this behavior, the ONLY way to do it is to use Safari on your iOS device and navigate to m.google.com/sync and change the setting there. A "regular" GMail account in iOS has a setting that lets you change this preference, but once you set GMail up as an Exchange account the only way to do it is to change the setting on Google's servers as described above.
But once you do that, Exchange is awesome.
That's what I did when I first set up my Gmail account. I was trying to avoid having both my Gmail and Yahoo account setup on the ipad. What I did first is in my first post.

Yep, works just fine with iOS 5.1. Just for kicks I deleted my GMail account and set it up again as Exchange, no problems whatsoever.
This is the reason. Go to Gmail settings (Browser), POP/IMAP. Setting up your Gmail should work.
I did go to m.google.com/sync and set the preference to delete under the ipad account after I setup Microsoft Exchange. It worked great.
Okay. Contacts are the concern. Missed that part.

It's not a "trick". It works right now, on both my iPhone and my iPad, both running the latest software.
Encrypted11, I will give that a shot. I am still at a lost as to why Gmail won't show my contacts when I set it up under the Gmail option under mail account on the ipad. When I went to compose an email no contacts would pop up when I typed one in. The work around was adding my yahoo mail account and unchecking the calander and notes and just leaving the contacts box checked. Then when I went into Gmail to compose an email, the contact would pop up when I started to typw one.
In order to have the contacts show up, you need to set it up as an Exchange account. Follow the directions I linked to. It should take you about 2 minutes to set up.

I did set it up exactly like the link before I posted tonight. It works fine other then I don't see anything that I have in my label folders. When I click on them on my ipad they are empty. When I access my Gmail from the web instead of the ipad mail icon my saved emails are in my label folders.
This process looks to be the same as the one linked?
Step 1 and 4 has ammendments. Google's instructions are telling you to input @googlemail.com, which doesn't work. however, @gmail.com will work.
Either set up Exchange with the above method, or the other way would be setting it up as a Gmail. You would be able to see your labels as folders within the mail app.
While setting it up as Microsoft Exchange does work, I'm just missing access to my saved folders as mentioned above. I may revert back to setting it up like before using the Gmail and my Yahoo for contacts.
The instructions don't tell you to input an @googlemail.com. It say's if you use an @googlemail.com. Just to note, I use an @gmail.com.
