I setup Gmail as my default email and everything works fine except it doesn't show my contacts when I compose an email. To get around this I also added my yahoo account and in the mail settings under my yahoo account I unchecked all the boxes except my contacts. Now when I compose a Gmail email it will show my contacts. My question is why doesn't my contacts show up with just having my Gmail account setup? Do I have to leave it this way for it to work correctly?

I'm at work and don't have it with me. What still makes me scratch my head is why when I set it up as a Gmail under "Add Account", it works fine but my contacts are not there when I compose an email. That is why I had to also add my Yahoo account and just leave the contacts box checked. Then when I composed an email in Gmail, my contacts would pop up when I started to type them in.
Beats me either, there's no reason not to include a contact list.
The point I'm driving towards is that are you looking at the main mailboxes page? It consists of
Inboxes
Yahoo! Mail
Gmail
All Inboxes
Accounts
Yahoo! Mail
Gmail
To view your labels, you're supposed to go hit Gmail under the account heading. Just confirming if you're looking at the right place.
With it setup through Microsoft Exchange it only shows Gmail under inboxes as I don't add my Yahoo account, and all my labels are empty when I press them. Now when I setup Gmail under the "add Account" the normal way I do see my label folders.
On a side note, if I remember correctly, when setting up the Gmail account the normal way it only shows calendar and notes and no contacts box? But the Yahoo account shows calendar, notes and contacts boxes.
Can you check your mail,contact,calendar settings? Make sure the Sync option is set to "no limit" or the maximum you could get.
The default could be as low as 3 days, therefore mails that are received over the selected time frame will not be downloaded onto your iPad.

For future use, you may also want to turn on iCloud backup for contacts just to make sure your contacts can be easily ported to the next iDevice (since your email's contacts are ported to your iPad) if you will ever make a purchase of another Apple product in the future.

Yes I get all my mail no matter which way I set it up. I just loose contacts setting up the normal way and my label folders if I setup the Microsoft Exchange way.
Strange, now that my Gmail is turned into an Exchange, the Gmail folders are viewable and its contents can be seen too in my account.
Also on the other hand, it seemed that iOS never had an option to allow syncing of contacts for Gmail accounts, I was also using other contact lists like you. Now with exchange, and "days to sync" fixed, I've got no issues at all.
Has yours been setup as an Exchange or did you just try it? I may have to sit down and tinker with it. Maybe it all has to do with the way I have the syncing and will have to look at the current setup as all my saved emails are old and it may be it's not pushing them because of the way the sync days is setup.
Mine was set up as Gmail all the while in the past and I had no issues, partially because my iCloud contacts all included email addresses and I added that painfully the first time I used iOS while the others were existing contacts on my actual Microsoft Exchange which allows contact syncing.
Now that I've switched the Gmail to an Exchange (I also have an actual Microsoft Exchange), I'm able to access everything, I did on Gmail settings, with the additional option of getting the contacts.
And yeah, I tinkered with it only hours ago.

Are you sure that you're looking in the right area for your labels? They're not under "Inboxes", you have to back out to where you see all your accounts, then select your GMail account under "Accounts", not "Inboxes". The you'll see your labels, and like I said earlier they may take a bit to populate. Also, if you're only syncing a few days of mail, then the labels will be empty if nothing has been added to them within your sync window.
It does work, you're either doing something wrong or not understanding.
I Could be doing something wrong not sure. I was very tired last night when messing with Exchange. The process you describe above is done within the mail app when I'm in my email, correct?
