Why doesn't my web page fill the screen?

Hello!

I just bought the latest MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.3 in Australia last month. I use firefox but am having trouble reading as the total screen isn't being utilised I use smh.com.au as a home page but it does not fill the screen and it hard to read. I was just in the Apple store and an employee there said she was having the same issue...

The Control 2 finger gesture makes it bigger but doesn't get rid of what look like large margins. I have tried the pinch gesture but maybe I am not using the correct technique as nothing happens...

I tried adding a screen shot by dragging a dropping but that didn't work

Finally, I don't know which forum is best: Lion or MacBook Pro...

Any ideas?

Kind regards,

Becky

Many web sites simplify the process of laying out the page by forcing the layout to a fixed width. Any extra width in the browser window typically takes the form of margins on either side. This forum exhibits the same behavior, as does my own site. There's really not much the average user can do about that, as even if you were to override the CSS code that sets the appearance - which may not be a trivial task for all sites - it may break the layout of the site.

Fortunately, if you use the Zoom In item in Safari's View menu, it will zoom the entire contents of the page, and will let you minimize or eliminiate those margins. If that just increases the text size and doesn't change the margins, uncheck View -> Zoom Text Only.

Hello Thomas,

Thank-you very much for your explanation. Do you know if Firefox has a similar solution like Safari as Firefox is my preferred browser. If not I may have to go back to Safari!

Kind regards,

Becky

What happens when you click on the top riht corner arrows of the windows? Does that give you full screen view with Firefox?

Cheers

Pete

Hi Peter,

I tried double clicking (that pesky trackpad!) and it just puts the browser window down on the end of my dock. If I hold and drag on the top right corner and resize on using the arrow it does nicely get rid of the margins. But it leaves me with the same small view. e.g. Same size of content but no margins....

Thx!

Bec

Just tried Firefox and the only way I can get auto fullscreen is go up to top menu Window > Zoom. Can't find any other simple options.

Good Luck

Pete
