Screen scrolls by itself

The same symptoms will occur if the keyboard spacebar is intermittently stuck. You could check for that by starting the keyboard viewer so you know what keys are pressed.

System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab > check "Show keyboard & Character Viewers in the menu bar".

Then in the menubar, show keyboard viewer.

Click the new icon and select keyboard viewer.

Correct. You could also test by holding the spacebar down to compare results to your symptoms.

Not a bug that I know of, it could be a physical keyboard issue. Maybe worn out/sticky/defective.

The browser is suppose to scroll down when the spacebar is pressed.

And scroll up when you press Shift-Spacebar.

A few months ago, I bought a new desktop iMac. (After using a Mac for 22 years, I'm pretty disappointed for several reasons.) I have experienced the runaway scrolling issue. For example, on FB, the page will scroll downward throughout all the old posts on my news feed. Another quirk is that while scrolling, the window I'm in can start zooming in and out, then it stops on its own. When this happens, scrolling up or down controls whether it zooms in or out. It will stay zoomed in or out even after rebooting.

I've read several complaints about this issue, and I want to add my stats to yours and help eliminate as many things as possible. People are questioning their mouse or software, and desktop models vs. laptops. This seems to be a equal opportunity bug, though. When I bought this Mac, I chose the old-fashioned corded mouse and the big corded keyboard, so don't blame your fancy mouse or wireless. That's all I have.

As I was telling my friends yesterday, I've read so many comments, similar to yours, trying to get a handle on this problem. None of our would-be causes or cures stops this from happening. I have no wrist cushion, never use the space bar to scroll. (I'm sorry you just now got your first Mac, because, unfortunately, they aren't the way they used to be. I think Apple is way more focused on their hand held devices.) ............ The only thing that seems to get me out of the scrolling problem is to keep hitting the 'esc' key over and over until it stops. I had it happen earlier today and that made it stop pretty quickly.

Macs used to be so much easier. That's why there are so many of us Mac fans. I happened to buy a new one (after 22 years of using a Mac) and enden up with this thing that I can't relate to at all. After looking around on my new Mac (and freaking out), the first thing I did ... and what you should do ... is use FireFox as a browser. Safari is crap. FireFox also gives you spellcheck wherever you go.

I have a wireless keyboard and magic mouse. I have the keyboard viewer up and see that WITHOUT MY TOUCHING THE KEYBOARD the viewer shows that the down arrow key is periodically depressed. As a result the screen scrools, it scrolls through menus that I have activated with my mouse, and when I was watching Youtube decreased the volume all the way.

I have not gotten any warning that my batteries are low. Any ideas?

OK, I know this is a "Feature". However I just want to turn it OFF. it bugs me constantly, and want it GONE. Is there any way to turn this feature OFF?
