Philips say that AppleTV will not work with their sets?

I think they know exactly what they are talking about, but passing the buck. The part about the Apple TV 3 gives that away, they clearly understand the Apple TV 3 works because it outputs at 1080p, and that it's nothing to do with video formats.

There are too many bits of mis-information in that conversation to go through one by one, needless to say though most of it is nonsense. What is clear is that your TV doesn't support 720p. You might try connecting the Apple TV to another TV, setting the TV resolution setting on the Apple TV to 480p and connecting it back to the Philips TV.

I doubt all Philips TV's don't support 720p, but clearly that model doesn't.

The OP in that transcript however says AppleTV 3rd gen so it will support 1080p as I know you are well aware.

edit - I see the 'tag' in the original question has AppleTV 2 - I never use these trendy thinsg so usually ignore them.

Maybe there's no ATV3 tag?

It could be either device.

AppleTV has over the years had various incompatibilities with certain sets but whether or nto it's Apple or the TV manufacturer's messed up HDMI implementation is hard to say.

I'm having the same problem with my ATV2 and Philips Cineos TV. Every minute or so, when playing films, tv shows or TED talks via ATV, the screen goes black and silent, sometimes for up to 10 seconds and returns after a static flash, or the TV says "No video signal". maybe this sheds some light.

I happen to own a Philips Ambilight TV. I also own a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge (with HDMI output) and Apple MacBook Pro (early 2011 model).

The first time I connected my Thinkpad Edge via HDMI to my Philips TV, I experienced the problem that the display colors sometimes "inverted". Sometimes for only a couple of seconds, sometimes for minutes.

At first I thought the problem to be the HDMI cable so tried different ones. Didn't help. Then I used an other HDMI input on the Philips TV (mine has three). Tried all three, didn't help.

Needless to say my Thinkpad Edge had all the latest Microsoft (Win 7 64-bit) and Lenovo drivers installed.

I tried my wife's Thinkpad Edge, same problem. So it seemed to be a Philips TV problem.

However, as I didn't find a solution at Philips, Lenovo nor elsewhere on the internet, I tried my MacBook Pro.

Bought an original Apple Display Port tot HDMI connector and hooked it up to my Philips TV.

Again, same problem. Searching the internet again I found a Forum in which a Philips specialist wrote (in response to a question from a Mac Mini owner experiencing the same problem) that Philips uses a different color scheme (whatever that might be). He also gave a solution for Mac OS X. Install a display override directory and file in:

/System/Library/Displays/Overrides

Directory to be created:

DisplayVendorID-410c

File (in that directory):

DisplayProductID-0

The file 'DisplayProductID-0' contains:

This solved the problems on my MacBook Pro.

I don't know how to install such a file on an Apple TV but maybe you can find some solution on the internet when searching which arguments:

Have you tried another HDMI cable with the Apple TV 3rd gen?. It is better to use an HDMI cable compatible with the latest standard (ver. 1.4).

According to the info. on that TV, it only supports HDMI v1.3 out of the box (the TV is 4+ years old, according to the original release date). Have you updated the software on your Philips TV? (check Philips site for updates.)

Both your TV and Apple TV do 1080p 60Hz over HDMI. So, I do not see why it would not work.

There is no such thing as an HDMI 1.4 cable, there is only standard and high-speed versions. If you come across a shop trying to sell you an HDMI 1.4 cable, you should report them to trading standards

I know that the guys over at the HDMI group (http://www.hdmi.org/) don't want us to use version numbers but it makes it easy to figure out why something might not work.

You might be seeing something that I don't, however I fail to see how replacing a supposedly 1.3 cable with a supposedly 1.4 cable will help anyone. Except that is for the owner of the shop and his bank balance.

I have great news, and I hope you check this regularly because I had the same problem and figured out a solution. I bought my Philips back in 2007 because I wanted to have a high def 1080p television and the ambi-light just happened to be a nice added bonus. I love Apple products so I bought an AppleTV to network all of my computers at home with the television and needless to say, I was pretty bummed when I moved to a new place and had my Philips in the family room and couldn't get AppleTV to work. I had the same problem with the unsupported video format and it would occassionally come on and then disappear for an extended period of time. So then I thought logically, what would happen if I tried to hook up a brand new iPod to something that was created in 2007. There probably needs to be some kind of update to the old thing.

It's not your cables, it's not your AppleTV, it's your softward on your TV. All you need is a USB Thumb Drive and a computer. You'll need to plug in the USB to your TV (left hand side by the RCA input) to get an identification tag. Go to the Menu on your television and hit Software Update. It'll store the ID card on your USB. Simply plug that into your computer, click on the file, Accept the terms of the update and follow the instructions on the webpage. You'll need to stick the USB back into the TV (making sure not to do anything while it's updating) and once it's finished, viola, AppleTV works! I just tried streaming a file over my network to my AppleTV and it played perfectly fine.

Can someone help me? I also have the ambilight and I'm trying to hook my iPad up to it so I can hear iTunes through my tv. I hooked it up on the side with the USB/iPad charger and it says the same thing "unsupported video format". I did what the last person said, putting a USB thumb drive in and clicking on software update but when I do that it gives me 2 options. Current software info and local upgrades. Current software just shows my TVs (outdated/2006) software. When i choose Local upgrades it just says "checking for new software on inserted media". Then says "no software found on the inserted media" it never gives me an identification tag like the last poster states. I did take the USB out and searched on my computer for any files related to my tv and found none. I put the USB back into my tv and it just gives me the same info as before. Can someome PLEASE HELP. I just wanna listen to some music while I clean my house! Lol

THank you so much! I called philips and they told me the tv was not compatible. I almost just threw out my 1400 dollar tv because it wasn't compatible but I got it to work thanks to trying this simple software update. You rule.
