I have been having this issue for about half a year now and tried repeatedly all the "fixes" proposed here and elsewhere - nothing helps. The core problem appears to be that MS uses incompetent software "developers" and they screwed up badly with this essentially useless software. It is plain ridiculous that time-proven email program core-functionalities that have worked for decades such as communicating with a mail server in the background (not hanging the software in the foreground) don't work any more. Outlook 2011 is not just a step down from Entourage and other Mail clients, it is a galaxy-wide jump down into the abyss. Outlook 2011 for Mac severaly reduces my productivity and that of countless other users.

I work for a global organization and I, like many, receive and send hundreds of emails per day. This issue is my #1 productivity killer for the day!

Fuzzy math here I understand... but here's the debilatating journey anybody can relate to:

6 secs per occurance, 10-20x per email, 100x emails per day, 100-200 mins per day, 500-1,000 mins per wk,

My math skills are not what's in question.

Help!

I've been experiencing the same problem. Outlook becomes unresponsive and displays the little circle indicating its busy. It always comes back but while it is happening Outlook is out of commission.

I am with the others. This is not ram or number of applications running. I've wondered if it could be a virus as I don't run any virus software. I want my processing power and don't want it chewed up as used to happen with my PC.

I've had my Macbook Pro at least two years. The problem began occuring sometime in the last year. I am close to reinstalling my machine to try to get rid of it. It is close to a show stopper for productivity on a busy day.

Actually to everyone. I finally got in touch with Office Support. The young lady went directly to the problem. Went to my "tools" tab in outlook, went to offline mode. Then went to draft folder and deleted the drafts that were in my folder. Closed out of Outlook. Reopened, set tools tab to online mode.

Haven't had any problems since. She said this would be the problem if it happened again. She didn't seem to have any problems figuring it out. So, don't know if she was just lucky that one time or if this really is the issue..

We'll see....

Thanks Dwillis1445 .. I followed your instructions but didn't have any drafts in my draft folder. Just incase there was a trick there I did as you suggested go into offline mode. Since there weren't any drafts I couldn't delete any but I did close Outlook. I then restarted Outlook and went back Online mode. The problem still occurs.

In trouble shooting this I did notice that when Outlook hangs up network traffic stops. As soon as Outlook is freed up there is suddenly an unusually large amount of traffic. I wonder if the "hanging" has something to do with synchronization?
