superfish/window shopper

This is driving me up the wall. Somehow window shopper/superfish add on has been installed on my macbook. I have contacted superfish, and got the standard response, remove it from you add ons, but it is not there.

I never intentionally added this I have no idea how it got here, i thought installing snow leopard would help but it is still here. It is killing me every page i look at some stupid pop up window appears showing me a list of other products i just don't want.

Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it or if i delete the hard disk and reinstall (which i am thinking of doing regadless, Macbook needs a clean up) will it be gone then?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Do you (or anyone else on this thread) have Glims installed?

For me, it looks like Glims added the Superfish functionality. If you have Glims installed, you'll find it in Safari Preferences: Glims: Ads/Shopping. It defaults to "Hit Me: Add everything. Life is good." Clicking "Off" seems to solve the issue.

Here's the description from the Glims developer in the preferences: "The ads and shopping comparison engine is experimental. In an effort to find creative ways to pay for our development, this feature reformats the web content to include sponsored ads, banners, and shopping comparison elements."

Surprise! We're being experimented on! (I give them more slack than I ought because I use Glims every day to search Google Scholar)

Thanks for the post. This Superfish rubbish has been getting under my skin for a couple of weeks. The culprit was the Awesome Screenshot add-on.

Awesome Screenshot doesn't come close to living up to its name, it simply consistently makes a pigs-ear of any screenshot I have tried to take. I'd take the time to explain why but if you're reading this I've no doubt you'll sympathise with my not wanting to assist the developers with any constructive feedback whatsoever.

I now have no Awesome Screenshot and, once again, no inane advertising. Happy.

here is the solution to remove if you don't find any plug-in/extension

TLDR; it's DownLite adware -- remove these files from Mac OS X:

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist

/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack

/System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework

Empty the trash and restart the computer (or vice-versa).

I hope it solve your issue for me he did. I didn't found all the file but the one found did the trick!

alanlefevre -- you are my hero today. i searched for about a half hour and couldn't find anything that did the trick. your solution made this superfish BS go away entirely.

THANK YOU!

to re-iterate, to remove superfish from mac, and uninstall other related crap like conduit:

- remove the following. you may need to use Terminal and if it gives you permission denied, sudo rm -rf these files

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist

/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack

/System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework

- Open up System Preferences > Users & Groups > Your User > Login Items -- delete anything suspicious there

- Remove the "Conduit" folder in your home folder

- Open up Safari and delete any suspicious extensions in Preferences > Extensions

- Also make sure that your home page is set properly in Safari

- Open up Chrome and delete any suspicious extensions in Tools > Extensions

- Also go into Tools > Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Reset Browser Settings

Hope that helps.

Here's another link that really helps, and somewhat expands on what alanlefevre mentioned: http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-identification/

Just in case anyone has as much trouble as I did finding this solution, here are some common search terms:

mac osx uninstall superfish

mac osx uninstall conduit

osx chrome remove superfish

osx safari remove superfish

osx uninstall lightspark

osx lightspark adware spyware

Thanks again, alanlefevre

Dear Alan le fevre, Thanks a ton for helping out; had tried sooo many options earlier, as given on other sites but nothing was working for removing the bugging malware Superfish Shopper from Safari on Mac OS for MacBook ! This reelly worked wonderfully ! I had no other extensions installed, not had MeasureIt, GLIMS, Awesome Scn, etc. - but your way worked. Thanks.
