Cannot get sound from my external speakers (Bose)

New MacBook Air...internal speakers work fine. Have Bose speakers that I just tested on my Dell laptop, so I know they work. When I plug them into the headphone jack I get no sound. Volume is up and mute is not on.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Does the Bose offer a hard wired cord from the device? Or is there a patch cord that plugs into a female connector on the speaker end?

I suspect RRFS is thinking of the latter, where you would replace the Bose cord with the other cord, creating a simpler connection. But if it's hard wired then you are right--only a female->male adapter would work, since you are trying to get a different female jack to plug into.

As I said, I do expect something more is going on, though if this solves it you may not worry about that. The only reason I would try to keep running down the issue would likely be if either or both devices (the Bose speaker system and the Air) are still under warranty. One of the two appears to have some issue, and obviously it might reappear later in another situation, so in that case it might be worthwhile to get the "bad" device serviced or replaced with one that is within specs.

Ok, I must have skipped past the post where you tried the control input. I'm at a loss here. My MBA is powering an ancient set of Sony Walkman speakers and it is just the standard stereo jack connection. I'm starting to think the jack in the MBA might be the culprit, if the contacts aren't lineing up right it could be a problem. I wish you the best of luck, check out your warranty options.

I sure appreciate all the suggestions gang. Since Apple earbuds work when plugged in to the headphones jack on my MBA, and I know these Bose speakers work (because I tested them again with my Sandisk MP3 player)...it has to be something with the external speaker's cable. I think it doesn't go far enough into the headphones jack.

I've ordered this item from Amazon in hopes it will resolve my problem. I will share what I find out on this board, just so the information can be shared with anyone else who comes across this problem.

Thanks again!

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

Just to share information for others who might come across this problem with Bose or any other external speakers, where the male jack doesn't quite go in far enough for the MacBook to recognize it, here is the solution that worked for me:

This is a very inexpensive solution and works great for me. I'm listening to my Bose speakers now and they sound great!! Thank you to all of you for your suggestions and help troubleshooting.
