WIFI alternatives

I have a WIFI only iPad 2. I had hoped to use it on a commuter train I ride daily. The train has wifi, but it is pretty poor service. Very little signal strenth (even on my Macbook Pro). Using this iPad, is there any alternative I can use for internet access other than wifi? I emailed the transit company about improving the wifi service, but I am sure that will go nowhere.

Not sure where you are but based on your description of the quality of the wifi on the train, I would guess you are in Boston. The wifi on the train, presented by AT&T *****. At best. On a good day.

The other option not mentioned here is, if you have a smart phone, simpy use the wifi hotspot from the phone. I do that every day on the train. (oddly enough, AT&T). Cheaper than a 3 g pad, and cheaper than a wifi, since I already bought the phone.

The charge is 20 per month. Surcharge to the phone bill. Works for for browsing. Will not work for streaming video.

Nope, not in Boston. Never been there -- although it is a must vacation for me. Would love the history. I take the train to Seattle.

And no, no smart phone. I have always thought the screens were too small. That is why I have the iPad.
