Help. I just switched to iCloud and now my Mac Mail doesn't work, and other problems.

I just kept getting PLAGUED with apocolyptic "Make the Switch to iCloud Before it's Too Late!" emails and just switched over.

Only to discover that now my Mac Mail now no longer works.

No, I am not on Lion yet. Is this the reason why? I'm sure it is. I can collect (thank God) my emails on my iPhone, and online through my browser, but it's a pain in the butt, because I can't sort them, answer them, put them into smartboxes, etc. (I got a lot of smart mailboxes.)

Why have I not upgraded to Lion, you wonder?

Because I have a wicked old Quicken program (Quicken for Mac 2004) with ALL my accounting/bank/tax info in it (I'm a sole proprietor) and it will not work when I go to Lion (I can't even import it to the Quicken 2007 for Lion, it's that old, that's like a whole other problem, does anyone know if iBank can import Quicken 2004 data??) This is why I have been putting off this transfer for so long because I don't have hundreds of dollars to buy a new Quicken (or whatever I need) program.

But I thought my Mac Mail would be ok.

But it's not.

Sigh.

If anyone out there can help me with my dilemma(s) with thoughts, answers, suggestions, I would be eternally grateful. And I'd buy you a beer if I could stick it through this bloody machine.

Hi Roger, me again.

Everything was working fine due to your very helpful advice (see below)--I entered all the settings and it worked--but now, once again, in Mac Mail, I am unable thru the cloud (i hate the stupid cloud) to get my mail. Usually, I hit 'get mail' and it comes in. But for last day or so, it stopped doing it. I can check email online thru the cloud, but I have a ton of separate mailboxes so since I'm online it all just goes to the inbox.

Help! I didn't fiddle with any settings at all, this just happened without me touching a thing in the settings (and just so you know the ONLY reason I'm not on Lion yet is cos I have Quicken 2004 which won't even convert to Lion-compatible Quicken 2007, and I can't lose it right now, I have no time to convert to another program (use it for my self-empl. biz). I'm on Snow Leopard. MacBook, 10.6.8. Any help you can offer, I appreciate very much.--Julie

You haven't postged your system (please always do) but I gather you are on a pre-Lion system, which is therefore not iCloud-compatible.

You can set your Mail application up manually to access your iCloud email:

As you've had it working with the method I posted I can't really add anything to that. It's possible you may have hit one of the annoying glitches that various people have reported; though if this has been going on for more than a few hours that seems unlikely. Try changing your password, making sure that it has at least 8 characters, at least one of which is a numeral and at least one upper-case. Longer and more complicated is even better. See whether that makes any difference.

Dear Csound1:

Again I write to you for help.

My MacMail stop retrieveing incoming mail about 36 hours ago. I can send outgoing messages, I cannot get any incoming messages. I'm on Snow Leopard,MacBook, 10.6.8.

When I click on the grayed-out triangle w/an ! in it w/in a circle it gives me this error message:

The area in the Mail preferences where you can change the incoming mail server is grayed out (see pics attached).

I haven't had time to solve my Quicken problem (as you may remember) so that I can upgrade to Lion (would that solve this Mail problem?) but I DO need to solve this Mail problem now. I didn't touch a thing in prefs or online in my mail and this just started happening (before it would just load in automatically). In my sidebar of my MacMail, the iCloud's are grayed out (see pics).

(ok, this message isnt letting me upload any more pics, I can email them privately if you want)

Any help you can give me I appreciate it. Thanks. Julie

Hi Roger,

Tried it, w/complicated password. Didn't work. Is it time to give up and go to Lion and Quicken be ******?

Only you can decide that: but it should be possible to get it working if you've followed my instructions absolutely exactly - they were taken as I set it up and I have had it working for ages now with no problems whatever.

Just looked at the picture you posted in your previous post - the second one has the wrong server for iCloud. It's greyed out because it saw your email address and assumed you wanted to connect to MobileMe, never having heard of iCloud. You need to start over, holding the option key when leaving the first screen as indicated in the first picture in my instructions. Fail to do that and it all falls over.

I'm on 10.6.8 on a couple of Macs. As I said one of the pics you posted has the wrong server address. If you have followed the instructions this shouldn't be the case as you would have typed imap.mail.me.com there; in order to be able to do this you have to hold the option key when leaving the first screen. What else doesn't match? Can you post shots of any screens which don't match my proecess?

Help. I just switched to iCloud and now my Mac Mail doesn't work, and other problems.
