When I run ical on my mac I get the error

The server responded with an error.

Access to “name of an event in my calendar” in “category of event in my calendar” in account “iCloud” is not permitted.

How can I fix this problem?

I have searched through old events to delete but they seem to repopulate and keep the error going. The event in quest was created in an old .mac account

I deleted the files as you suggested, but now all my calendar accounts are gone. New cache files were created when I started Calendar again, but nothing is being rebuilt. Doesn't appear that iCal is doing anything in the Activity Monitor either.

Any idea how long this will take? Fortunately, all of my iCal calendars are still in iCloud but those aren't syncing either.

A Friend recently had a problem with this and El Capitan, he receives bookings for blacklane.com. I tried the turning on and off iCloud, removing caches etc but to no avail. When comparing his .ics file he received via email with one I had I noticed a line toward the end saying METHOD:REQUEST I deleted that line (as it wasn't in my standard .ics file) and then tried again. Problem was gone and it sync'd across all devices. might be different for each sender of your invites but this is what worked in this instance.

This problem still occurs under macOS 10.12.2.

I found that deleting the Calendar cache will fix this problem. This suggests corrupted caches and thus a defect in the caching system of Calendar.

The easiest way to get rid of this problem is to:

  1. Quit Calendar
  2. Open Activity Viewer and Quit "CalendarAgent"
note, using QuickLook on any calendar item in the Finder will relaunch CalendarAgent which needs to be not running at step 3
  1. Delete ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
  2. Delete ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache-shm
  3. Delete ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache-wal
  4. Launch Calendar

Calendar will read the information from the surrounding data folders and files in ~/Library/Calendars/ and recreate the caches cleanly.

If for some reason the files listed to delete re-appear before you launch Calendar, it means something is triggering the system calendar operations. Try quitting all of your applications and starting at step 2 or logging out with the "Reopen windows when logging back in" unchecked, then logging back in.
