Eventually these seem to show up again, but it's very annoying. I add a podcast because I want to listen to it now... I am on Windows 7 with iTunes 10.
I can try to add it again, but it never shows up. It's like iTunes thinks it's already added it, but it's invisible in both Music and Podcasts.

Unfortunately my iTunes is up-to-date [11.0.1 (12)], so that is not the issue. Good luck though!
Hi QuadShot, I can confirm in my case (not terribly helpful in yours I know) having moved to version 11.0.1 has indeed allowed me to reclassify things as podcast again.
Before converting the media kind to Podcast make sure it has an Album name.
A smart playlist with suitable rules will find any apparently missing files.

Yes, I have experienced the greying-out of the options tab when I try to change the media type of my digital booklets from music to books, does anyone have a solution for this?

In iTunes 12.0.1.26, I do not have the option to change the MEDIA KIND to Podcast. Music is the only choice in the dropdown list.
Press and hold down shift as you right-click > Get Info and you can use the old style dialog box.
