Switch from windows, But mpg files won't play in quictime or VLC player

Hi;

I switched from windows xp, and i have some mpeg files i created in xp using VideoReDo (converted from windows media center) They play well in windows, but on my mac they don't. I have tried Quictime, VLC, windows media player and Real player. Does anyone have any way to play these files in quicktime?

I get the following error: "Quictime cannot open the file.... It is not a file that Quictime understands (-2048)"

Imac 1.83 Intel Dual core, Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Welcome to the discussions, Xoineg.

If these are MPEG-2 files, then you'd need to purchase Apple's MPEG-2 component. However, if VLC can't play them, it makes me wonder what kind of files they are. The website for VideoReDo implies MPEG-2, but if they're making software they assume will run on a Windows machine, they can include a bit of software that would work for Windows and not on the Mac.

The fact that VLC can't play it means it must be waaay out of spec for MPEG-2 IF that's what it is. (Since according to this page http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html VLC can play MPEG-2 on ANY platform)

Hrm, you lost me there...

If you don't have MPlayer OSX, get it here:
http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/MPlayer-dev-CVS-050904.dmg

When the disk image file finishes downloading, double-click on it. You should get a window showing MPlayer OSX and some text files. Drag MPlayer OSX to your hard drive's Applications folder.

Then Open your applications folder and click only once on MPlayer OSX (the program) to select it. From the Finder's File menu on the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Get Info. Check the checkbox named "Open using Rosetta" and then close that window.

Now to run it...

1] Double-click MPlayer OSX

2] If the playlist window is not already showing then pull down the Window menu on the menu bar at the top of the screen, select "show/hide playlist"

3] Find the mpeg file in Finder (on your Desktop or in a folder) and drag its icon into the MPlayer OSX playlist window.

4] Select the file in the playlist window so that the line with the file's name is highlighted.

5] Click the "i" button for info

6] If the Movie Info window opened, tell us what is in the File, Video and Audio format fields.
