I tried to open my iPhone 3GS's camera to take a photo, but the shutter didn't open. It's running iOS 5.1 and am wondering if anyone knows a way to fix this without me having to make a trip to the Apple Store. Thanks for reading!

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device. Have you gone through ALL of these troubleshooting steps?
I have the same problem.
I did a lot of research.
Seems the problem is the camera hardware: shutter unable to open.
Some people have resolved this by painfully replacing the camera on the IC board..... might as well buy a new iPhone.
The Camera quality is really not up to the iPhone standards.
Tried all methods mentioned here. None worked. Figured the only solution would be to purchase a new camera part. Then I had an idea to take a screen shot to trick the shutter into opening. Brilliant...it worked!!! I suggest this be the VERY FIRST thing tried from now on to avoid the hassle of resetting your phone. To take screen shot, hold power button on top and home button on front simultaneously until you hear the shutter sound. Good luck to all!

Could I ask ? Are you in camera mode when you do this or some where else?
Iphone 3 has just a shutter or closed shutter I should say and not working at all tried several fourm answers no good any help please?
