I can no longer send e-mail from Mail version 3.6
I am able to receive e-mail but can no longer send mail. Any ideas. It is a PowerMac running OS 10.5.8 with Mail 3.6
Power Mac G5 (Late 2005), Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Is this MobileMe or dot mac account?
If not who is the provider, the part after the @ sign?
My provider is Comcast. I should add I also have a Mac Pro and it does not have the same problem. It is running OS 10.6.8 and the settings are identical in both systems.
Hmmmm,
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.
I have moved all the files and folders that were there but am still unable to send messages. Any other ideas?
Hmmm, is it using Outgoing port 465 & SSL with Password for Authentication?
No. It is using port 995 & SSL for identification as is the MacPro.
Sorry. I looked at the Comcast page and set it up as they described but nothing has changed.
Do you have any AV, Firewall, or Web filtering apps running?
I am running Norton Anti-virus but nothing else. My firewall settings are to allow incoming connection but it says nothing about outgoing. Could there be something else we are missing?
We could be missing something unknown, but is there a way to disable Norton?
I have disabled Norton Antivirus but am still unable to send or forward email.
I also have Entourage on my system and it is capable of sending email. Could it be causing the conflict?
I don't believe it could be causing a conflict.
I think it must be a munged setting in Mail.
TryAdding a new account with the settings, you just need to have a unique description about the 2nd step, other things can be the same... except in 10.6 & up.
I can't create a new account without deleteing the old account. Is there anything else I could try.
We should be able to get back to this point after deleting that account if...
On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Make a copy of this file then trash the original.
