Where can I download a Java Runtime Environment that actually works on OS 10.6.8?

Last week there was this security alert urging Apple users to get rid of a Java application. Since then I have issues accessing some of my regular websites. I need Java Runtime Environment for it, but cannot find it anywhere on the Internet. Where can I find Java Runtime Environment that actually works on Apple Mac OS 10.6.8?

I never had any problems using this chat programme in Firefox up to yesterday. Today I was able to use this chat programme via Safari, so it must be something that has gone wrong in the Apple-Firefox interaction rather than with this chat programme.

Is there any way I can re-enable the execution of Java applets (no idea what it is btw) in Firefox and if so, how do I do that step by step?

Apple phoned me today and solved the issue. Apparently Firefox disabled particular java applications for security reasons. Only thing I had to do was to make sure I had the most recent update of java (which I had) and then go to the Tools menu --> Add-ons --> enable java plug-in 2 for NPAPI browsers 13.7.0

I hope it stays well from now on.
