FCPX: Moving the Moon - Animation
Is there a way to get the moon in this image to move, say, from where it is now towards the right? Not sure how to do this without moving the bushes with it.

If it is one single image how would that be possible? You need to separate the components to make them move independently.
Obviously no :-)
The moon and the bushes must be on TWO different "tracks" or "layers".
Super easy to do using photoshop.
Start maybe with another image (so you have the complete moon on one layer, and the bushes without the light of the moon on another one). Then use keyframes in FCPX.
Or do everything in Motion...
Easy. But, again, I really would start with two diffrerent images :-))

you could use the same techniqué as in my demo of a Parallax Shift here:
(effect overdone for educational purpose!)
or
effects created with Pixelmator (=for seperating layers and 'healing') and Motion5.
for sure, you can not 'drive' the moon complete out of the frame - then indeed, you have to re-enact the whole picture using other sources for a full full-moon (nasa.org?) and a stary back-ground ...
I can email you a high quality image of the moon if you want to superimpose and move it over your own background.
Thank you everyone. I was expecting that FCPX could work magic 😉
After I posted, I considered that it might have to be on two separate layers. I think only Motion supports layers, not FCPX, although I might be wrong. I do have Photoshop although I am not an expert with it.
Ian, thank you for your kind offer. I sent you an email 😉
Gosh, I REALLY need to learn Motion!
Karsten - Love your videos, especially the second one 😀
Switchie2, would it be possible to separate this single image into two layers in PhotoShop - or do you mean to create a new image with two layers?
I would start with two different images. Because, with this one, you'll have some more work to do using the stamp tool in photoshop for instance (to erase the bushes from the moon and have it "clean" in order to move it in the sky without taking the bushes with it
you can clean the moon in photoshop and reconstruct a clean moon and clean bushes. But it's more work.
Start with a clean moon (NASA site) and clean bushes you'll put in the foreground.
It'll be easier :-))
Pa : workflow :
Create two diferent layers in Photoshop
Import the psd file in FCPX
Add keyframes to move the moon
Done
Thank you Switchie2. This is my project for today 🙂
Yes, to the keyframes 🙂 Love them!
Ohh, wait a minute! Are you saying you can use psd files in FCPX? I didn't know that!
Yes you can
They come in as compound clips
Very easy to deal with
Magic
Oh my gosh!!!! I just tried it and did as you said - break apart compound clips!! This opens up yet another new world in FCPX!! How I love this program!
Now I need to give up work so I can stay on FCPX all day long! I am totally addicted to its power!
Beautiful! Thank you so much! Watching video now 😀

I said that 6 months ago too ... 🙂
my complete tutorial is on my German board, but I made a rough english version here:
https://sites.google.com/site/ksfcpx/parallax-shift-engl
it is really just a 2 step process: some drawing , some 'movement' - M5 offers some 'ready mades'=behaviors, which supports the making of such effects. the most pain staking process is the 'punch out'.
(for future readers of this post: this link will probably expire within a few months, this site is just in the making)
