I moved stuff to icloud since it was telling me mobile me was going away. now I can't seem to log in to mail on my mac but I am getting it on my iphone. what's up? Ido I need to upgrade to lion? it looks like I will regret it and I am gunshy about doing it, cannot afford to lose a ton of time.

The MobileMe IMAP server “imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “XXXXXXX@me.com”
Post a screen shot, this sounds like you let the auto setup run rather than doing it manually
I tried to delete the account I had set up and set it up again, and it will not take my password even though I set up as imap. The password meets the requirements. It works through icloud online. I made sure the server names were correct, it didn't ask me for anything else. Tell me how to post a screen shot and I will, but it is rejecting my password when I try and set up the account...a setting must be off somewhere
Shift-cmd-4 will place a cursor on the screen, draw a box around the area to capture and release the mouse button, it will be saved on the desktop as Screen Shot2012 etc
To insert it in a post, click the small camera icon in the post/reply box and insert the shot at the cursor point:

And you are sure that you input all of the settings correctly, incoming and outgoing? if you are I have no explanation, the settings work.
it doesn't ask me for any settings other than the name of the server and whether I am using SSL (checkbox) and password. so not sure what the problem is.

That sounds like you're using the automatic setup, are you?
Post screenshots of Preferences>Accounts>Advanced & SMTP settings (click on Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)>Edit Server List>Advanced)
this is all I get on advanced, doesn't appear to allow the path you suggested. this is after I set up the account despite getting password failures for both incoming and outgoing.
also I am not using auto setup, I hit the + button and tried to add the account as you instructed.
It should work from the instructions Csound1 has given you but you may find it helpful to start again using the illustrated walk-through on this page:

It's basically the same but the illustrations will give you something to check against at each step.
