what is "helpd"
I keep getting "helpd unexpectedly quit" as a crash report. Anyone know how to solve this problem?
Thanks

helpd is the daemon that connects to the online help system on Apple's servers.
Try deleting the helpd plist in you user /Library/Preferences folder.
You may also need to remove the help, and helpviewer plists.
They will get automatically get recreated and removing them may sort out the problem.

helpd is the daemon that's running on your mac that gives you access to the help files when you open a program.
For instance, the "help daemon" watches to see which program is open so that you see the right items in the help menu at the top of your screen.
If it's crashing, the it's likely a supporting file has been removed from your system.
Did this just randomly start happening? Or did it start happening after you installed a new program?
More details!
Perhaps it'll be a simple fix.

I'll delete the helpd plist in the Preferences folder (which I considered doing) and see if that helps.
The only new program I'll installed lately is the newest Firefox version. But I was getting the crash before that was downloaded.
Thanks for helping
Ron
If that doesn't work, post the crash report here. It might give us a clue what is causing the problem, but unless it is completely obvious, I won't be able to interpret it. There are others here (Linc Davis, e.g.) that are better able to interpret them and might chime in.
Check out the response of Pondini to a similar posting of the problem earlier:

Try clearing the Help caches. Probably the easiest way is via the free OnyX app.
Quit Help, then select the Maintenance icon in the OnyX toolbar, then the Rebuild tab. Towards the bottom, check (only) the Help Viewer menu box.
Thanks this solved my problem!
Big grave dig here, but helpd keeps unexpectedly crashing on my computer, since I updated to macOS Sierra a few days ago. "Keeps crashing" as in the window seems to be appearing every two or three hours.
