Why doesn't my iPhone ring sometimes?

How come I can't hear my iPhone ring sometimes? Can I do something to fix this?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1

I have this same problem! When people try to call me, my phoen won't ring, but I'll get the voicemail notification soonafter. But I have Verizon, so I wouldn't say that the problem is limited to the AT&T. Perhaps it has more to do with your location? Wherever the problem lies, it's very inconvenient. I don't get calls very often, but when I do they're usually time-sensitive. Is there any way to fix it?

This is very similar to how in many crowded areas you can have full bars but be unable to place a call.

This happens at many events like music festivals, pro football games, and amusement parks.

For example, when I had Sprint on a crowded day at Disneyland I could receive calls, but I could never place them.

What most people don't know is the US land line network is designed the same way; if more than around 20 - 25% of users at any given moment attempt to use their land lines, you won't get a dial tone.

These effects on both cell and land line can be readily demonstrated most anywhere in the SF Bay Area after even a minor earthquake as people call their friends to ask "did you feel that?"

I truly appreciate learning about the "crowd on the line or signal" problem. Not hearing the ring is frustrating because as a physician I need to get the information in a timely way. I didn't have this problem with ATT & my older iPhone. It's only been happening since I got my iPhone 5 and switched to Verison. I hope it can be fixed rather than get worse as more and more use moblie phones. (P.S. I was in SF for the 1989 earthquake and couldn't get a signal on my land line for quite some time, so I do know it isn't just a mobile phone problem). Thanks for all the information.

Dear Ziki7,

I didn't and it was.

You may already know about this, but is the 'Do not Disturb' feature switched on? This feature means the phone will not ring if screensaver is on. There is a little moon in the corner of the screen when it's switched on - you can switch it off again in settings.

I was an early adopter of Mac/Apple (1984), but absolutely no geek.

I just want my "stuff" to work. Currently that's 3 laptops, one Desktop, one iPad and one iPhone.

You solved my problem with my iPhone.

Thank you!
