My Iphoto icon has turned into a "package" after I tried to correct some authorization issues with the folder. (I followed the directions correctly as far as getting the authorization issue corrected) Now I can only get thumbnails and cannot find the high res images. When I open Iphoto and click on the thumbnail I get a gray screen with an exclamation point. Are my high res images lost?

You iPhoto icon has been a package sicne iPhoto 08.
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assi=uming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Thank for the prompt responce. I downloaded Iphotolibrary manager and got this message:
"2358 photos could not be copied because they could not be found in the original library. Click the "View Log" button to see which photos could not be found."
Any suggestions about what I can do next?
Restore from your back up. If the files aren't there then that's your next step.

Actually I revisited adding a library in Iphoto library manager and when I came to the library in question the entry was grayed out. Does that help in figuring this out at all?

But it's moot: if the files aren't there then...
Sadly that is my backup. I had anohter disk whick was a redundant backup but it failed. It's part of the reason I am going through these images so I can get them onto another backup source. Do you think the library corrupted along the way?
I had a previous version of Library Manager which I've just updated, and I think I was looking at the version that was already on my drive. I went back to see if it could do anything with the info I downloaded from another disk and that was what was on the screen shot I sent.
What version of iPhoto are you using?

It's 8.1.2. The version that the library was created in was the one that came with Tiger os. Around 2009
The iPhoto Libraries should exhibit the iPhoto icon in the iPLM open window:
Try the following. It will create a new library with all of the orignal files that are currently in the Originals folder of your library. If those photos don't show up then they are long gone as Terence pointed out:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Rename the existing library folder to iPhoto Library-org.
2. Open the library package like this.

3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects. If the photos are missing then you can delete this new library and continue using the original library sans those missing photos.
