iOS 5.1.1 have batery loss

I have batery drain with the update to ios 5.1.1. I just take the cell of the lock screen and do nothing, and in seconds (300 seconds) i see going from 24% to 9%.

What's going on? I think updates are to solve problems, not get new ones!!!

iPhone 4S, Mac OS X (10.7.3), iOS 5.1.1

Getting closer - went from 52% to 27% in about an hour and a half of just sitting in my pocket. And yes, the phone does get hotter than it always has in the past. Yes - all apps were killed, and the phone rebooted. Currently at 16%, and still dropping like a rock. No exchange email client. It would be interesting to see if there are differences between the 4 and the 4S with this issue. Mine is a 4 - and if all I can get is about 4-5 hours on the phone, it is practically useless. The heat generation is quite bothersome - no wonder I am losing so much battery power.

I wonder if yours isnt some sort of battery (physical) issue. Such as a bad battery? I only say that because I dont have any heat coming from mine. The only exception to that was when I was using it at work today, it did seem to get hot while I was using it...but not when it just sits.

Even if the asumption is correct and that an open app was what was causing my battery drain, I still think Apple should fix the issue. What good is having the multitasking tray if I have to close every app as I switch to save battery? Pointless. The two apps I have open almost constantly when Im working is Safari and Messages. Mainly because I am using them frequently. I will, sometimes, have mail open as well, as I am getting emails. But, its usually just messages and safari.

I wont be able to let my phone deplete down to 0% tonight, as I have work tomorrow. Ill have to charge it to 100% overnight, reset the usage meter, and let the clock start running tomorrow to see what happens under a normal working day for me.

For those that may be wondering, I have not updated my iPad2 since iOS 5. My iPad never had the battery drain issue that my iPhone4 has had. Im not looking to flirt with disaster, so I never updated to 5.1 on it.

This is all we need. Another battery drain thread.

I know, and it seems to come with every OS update. I've seen it all from "iOS 4.x.x Battery drain?" all the way to "iOS 5.1.1 battery drain?" The fact that people claim battery issues after EVERY update when most users here report no issue is what makes it a lot less believable that there is significant change in battery.

What is even worse is when people put screen shots up showing they are getting better usage than what apple states in the specs yet they believe their battery is draining. 40 million phones sold and only a handful here have issues. Actually a lot more here have no issues with battery drain. I have had the phone since the 3G and have not had a battery issue since day one over 3 years ago. I think a lot of people here think they are using the phone lightly and are actually using it heavily on 3G instead of wifi which will drain any smartphone. I am traveling for work right now and the area I am working in has very marginal cell coverage and I usually have the circle (GMRS) and one bar. My battery is draining fast only because I understand that the phone is trying to maintain a link to the cell tower and has to turn the radio power up to do it which does use more battery power. I am not complaining like a little baby here though. I just wish more people actually understood how electronics work and that a smart phone, no matter what brand, is going to use a lot of power to do the things you bought it for in the first place.

Also the update has only been out for a day and folks are already saying it is draining. I call BS on that. I think people just want to start another 10,000+ post just to say they started i.

I love the fact that because most people done have an issue with battery drain they dismiss it and say it does not exist. It is possible for a minority to have this issue and others not you know. That is just how things are.

I woke I IT in the city (London) and know what I am talking about. And I would not waste my time on this forum

If I didn't have a genuine issue. I have tried killing all program's and hard rebooting, I have tried letting my phone die to 0% then charging it fully. I still have the issue. And no I am not imagining it.

So of you don't have anything constructive to say please stop trolling this thread making it difficult for people that do have a genuine issue with battery life since 5.1.1 to get a resolution.

Anyone would think this was a forum full of kids with the amout of dismissive attitudes in here......

.....oh wait hold on!

Battery drain, whatever the iOS version, is caused by apps running. It doesn't matter what the version is, or when it was updated. Sometimes battery drain gets worse immediately after an upgrade (ANY upgrade) because background apps were interrupted and left in an indeterminate state, but sudden battery drain can happen at any time. Get out of your head that it is caused by 5.1.1; it isn't. You will see similar posts after every update over the past 4 years. You can try killing all the background apps. If you have an Exchange email account delete it, reboot, and add it back. Or just try killing email in the Quick Launch bar and rebooting.

Or try a hard reset. Check manual for instructions.

After the update My IPhone 4s started heating up while charging and off the charger. It was losing power while in standby like 10% every 10-15 mins. The phone was very hot, so I reset the network settings, deleted and re entered my emails and put it on wifi again. I waited till it ran out of power and plugged it till it fully charged. The phone didn't heat up while charging and I took it off the charger and it's been at 100% for the last 30 mins. My iPhone is back to normal and it's actually cool to he touch again.

I don't doubt some people have problems. I am curious, if it matters, just how you updated. Did you do the update through iTunes (and if so, Mac or PC), or did you do it wirelessly on the phone? My battery life seems, so far, to be about twice what it was before. 9 hours and 45 minutes with 93% remaining yesterday after the 5.1.1 update. Mine was done wirelessly. The more information we can accumulate, the better chance we have for solving this problem.

Since updating to 5.1.1 i am experiencing ridiculous Battery drain - for example in 3.5 hours gone from 100% to 31% with 26 minute call time. I did also experience my first total iphone whipeout crash yesterday afternoon, phone locked up and required a hard reset. I have 4s. Ive had an iphone since launch and never experienced this problem or posted with regard to a problem. I believe this update does have a problem.

Yesterday I also updated to 5.1.1. Battery drain problem again...so did a complete restore through Itunes > restore.
Nothing changed so again a complete restore with 4s in DFU mode. Nothing changed.
This morning I did a restore again and did not put anything on the phone. No apps, no settings changed.
My battery is now drained 25% in 1 hour without touching it 😮

I did my update OTA and have done a full battery discharge and full over night charge.

Since 8:30am this moring with light whatsapp use and no playing game or calls I have gone from 100% to 59%, shocking battery performance.

I am on Wifi at home and at work so have only been using 3G for the 25min commute.

Not good enough for the most expensive phone on the market.

I guess I'll throw my 5 cents in. For me anyway, my standby time

has improved. Typically, an overnight stand by of about 10 hours

would drain battery roughly 5%. Last night after 5.1.1 update,

it was only 2% under exact same conditions.

Will see today if there is any change when in use, although I

really don't expect any.

I will say that if you have cellular data, wifi, Bluetooth and any

app that actively uses location services all at the same time

you will drain battery. This is true with any smartphone.

I did quite a bit of research before finally settling on an iPhone 4s

and every other smartphone forum that I checked out all had

threads dealing with battery life, with the new 4G LTE being major

power pigs.

I also saw the same "mine is fine" vs. "mine is a power pig"

comments as well on those forums. Perhaps some of the issues

apps and how people use their devices and some of the issues

have to do with the fact that battery technology itself is not

that consistent (which is very likely).
