Wow, you would think your intelligence was being questioned.

I have read the linked Mac OS X Hints article, I read it when it was first published as well and I have read all of the comments. In fact there is another possible solution offered in the comments that is safer than the hack of the driver kext file in the original post.

Yes, it is a driver file. No it is not a preference file. How do we know this, the .kext file ending refers to a kernal extension.

A .kext file is a package containing a Kernel Extension and any resources/configuration relevant to it. Kernel extensions perform many critical functions at the core of Mac OS, and also are the means by which hardware support is provided (aka drivers). Many essential kernel extensions are loaded on startup, although they can be loaded dynamically or manually.

A simple preference file uses a .plist file ending.

if the USB pulls too much power, the driver will shut it down.

The drive will pull more power, so going to the trouble and risk of hacking his OS would then be pointless. Another issue is that older Macs may have the abilty to supply added power to a USB port, but often only to one. If he has another USB port drawing more power, such as to charge an iOS device, perhaps an iPhone, then he is sort of SOL for using this drive and likely would never know why it didn't work. At least the other possible solution offered in the comments addresses the power/USB port issue and is a safer hack.

Hey I have an early 2009 Mac Mini os x version 10.6.8, the internal superdrive broke and was rejecting disks. I went to an apple shop and got them to test an external macbook air superdrive, which worked. It just acts as a separate driver and I am still able to use my CD eject button on my wireless keyboard. I asked how much it was to get the internal superdrive replaced as I’m outside the warranty and its well over £100, so getting an external superdrive is the best option. If you are still unsure of whether a superdrive works on your mini just take it in to an apple retailer and get them to test one on your machine.
