Software update menu item is missing.
The software update menu item is missing.
When I click Settings...
Then General...
The top section just says About and Usage.
There is no menu selection for Software Update.
Any thoughts?

The software update menu item is missing.

What Operating System is on the phone?

The version is 4.0.1.
I guess this answers the question. Before 5.0 the upgrade requires iTunes.
Correct, the Over the Air upgrade functionality is available only after upgrading to iOS 5
