No Wi-Fi connectivity after upgrading to iOS 5.1.1

I have a new 16GB iPad Wi-Fi model. Since I got it, it ran flawlessly, on all Wi-Fi networks.

Today, I upgraded it to 5.1.1

  • It worked fine at work on a Linksys based Wi-Fi network
  • Came home, and tried to go online, through my Time Capsule 2TB model
  • The iPad connects to either 2.4GHZ or 5GHz -- but I can't get online.
  • Safari isn't able to surf, and all the apps that need connectivity -- are not online
  • I've tried to reset the network settings, tried rebooting, tried rebooting the Time Capsule, etc...
  • Nothing works.

My MacBookPro works fine, so it's not the network. Something is definitely broken with 5.1.1 and the way it plays with Time Capsule.

Any tips?

I wouldn't bother taking your iPad for testing as it has been adversely affected by the latest iOS 5.1.1 update and is not faulty in itself.

AS per my earlier post, after I updated my iPad (iPad 2) I started losing wifi connectivity on a regular basis. My wife, who also has an iPad 2 had no such issues. However, now that she has updated her tablet, guess what, wifi connection issues! Like yours, both iPads now have a constantly fluctuating signal display.

Its annoying having to constantly manually reconnect to my wireless network, but I'm sure it will be fixed once it is recognised as an issue and is not due to user error!

Something to try, if you are using Airport (express, extreme, or time capsule). no guarantees is would help, but it involves no cost.

The app store has a monitoring app for Airport called Airport Utility. It's an Apple app. I downloaded it on a whim a few weeks ago, and upon trying it out it uncovered a conflict between the DSL model and the Airport extreme I didn't realize was there correcting it improved response and eliminated an intermittent dropout issue. Not to say it will solve anything, but could be useful as a diagnostic tool.

It certainly sounds feasible, but my wife and I don't, as far as I know, have any common apps except for GMail. It might be worth removing that to see if the synch is causing issues.

At the moment though I have changed my router wireless settings (Non Apple btw), from 40MHz to 20MHz channel width for testing. As you say, why doesn't everyone have the issue (though a fair few do going by some of the threads I've been reading). It must be something peculiar to affected setups that *shouldn't* be causing an issue but is.

Same here. Upgraded this morning (Note to myself. Check the Apple forums for at least two weeks before upgrading in future) and since that upgrade, which was performed wirelessly by the way, I have been unable to connect to my Wireless Router. The same wireless router used during the upgrade. This is a BT Homehub. Rev B. WPA & WPA2 enabled.

Like those who posted above I see a spinning wheel next to the Wireless SSID. Also the WiFi signal meter (I also thought this had 4 bars but on closer inspection only has 3) jumps from Max to None every minute or so. This occurs anywhere and everywhere in the house including close proximity to the wireless router.

To me this is a prime example of a rushed (to fix a security issue in Safari) and untested software release.

I think I have now resolved by taking several steps outlined in a number of postings across various threads. Changed the router channel from Auto to a fixed channel. (I used channel1). Changed from WPA & WPA2 to WPA only. Rebooted the router.

I am looking forward to the response I get when asking for access to the on-site router to make some config changes when I next visit the local coffee shop and anywhere else offering free WiFi

I also had a similar prolem on both my 1st gen and New iPad after upgrading to iOS 5.1.1 via WiFi connection. It will connect for a while but the all of sudden not be able to access the Internet, even though it's connected to my WiFi modem.

- Never had issue prior to upgrade

- Issue only appeared several hours after upgrade, but was then consistent with loosing Internet every 2-5 min

- iPad shows as connected to the WiFi, but is just looses Internet connection

- Upgrade done "over the air" via WFi

- No other device (computer, iPhone, XBOX & etc) using the WiFi has any issues

- Tried to reset WiFi modem with no improvement

- Tried to restart iPad's with no improvement

- Connected to 2 other different WiFi networks with no improvement

I found that by turning off WiFi from the Settings -> General -> Network -> Wi-Fi -> Wi-Fi (On / Off) slide button and thn turning it back On fixed the problem for a short while and made it able to reconnect to the Internet. Now after having done that about 10 times the problem seems to have disappeared for good.

So maybe the iPad Wi-Fi controller needed a bit of a "massage" in order to work properly with iOS 5.1.1

Let me know if this works for y'all

I am having the same problems here. I upgraded to 5.1.1 via wi fi on my iPad 3. Few hours later, I get the error that "cannot connect to the network" on the same one I had been using.

What is interesting, is that my router has both 2.5 Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies (we use the 5Ghz for streaming to the TVs). The iPad will connect just fine to the 5Ghz frequency, but NOT the 2.5 Ghz frequency- I was using the 2.5 Ghz freqency when I did the update. I had updated the iOS on my daughters iPod touch as well, and guess what- same thing...won't connect to the router, and the iPod only recognizes the 2.5Ghz frequency. And I am standing 2 feet away from the router, with nothing in between the iPod, iPad and the router. As strange as it sounds, it appears that the update does something to the specific connection you use WHILE you update- that is if you do it over WiFi. I am downloading the update from iTunes and will restore the software that way to see if that fixes it- I will let you all know. But since I can connect to the SAME router, just using a different frequency, it is obviously not the actual hardware in the iPad.
