No Wi-Fi connectivity after upgrading to iOS 5.1.1

I have a new 16GB iPad Wi-Fi model. Since I got it, it ran flawlessly, on all Wi-Fi networks.

Today, I upgraded it to 5.1.1

  • It worked fine at work on a Linksys based Wi-Fi network
  • Came home, and tried to go online, through my Time Capsule 2TB model
  • The iPad connects to either 2.4GHZ or 5GHz -- but I can't get online.
  • Safari isn't able to surf, and all the apps that need connectivity -- are not online
  • I've tried to reset the network settings, tried rebooting, tried rebooting the Time Capsule, etc...
  • Nothing works.

My MacBookPro works fine, so it's not the network. Something is definitely broken with 5.1.1 and the way it plays with Time Capsule.

Any tips?

What I understood from the above discussion is that there are different kinds of problem after you upgrade to IOS 5.1.1

In some case the network setting didnt work but they still able to set the WIFI option and somehow corrected it by some wierd methods.

But in my case the WIFI option was grayed out (completely disable ,no effect on tapping) none of the restore methods worked.

Well today I went to apple service they checked my IPAD and confirm that they need to replace the wifi as they beleive that "grayed out situtaion" means some problem in H/W.

But I am still not convince how an Software upgrade can influnce an H/W so badly??

Any how I will get my IPAD back by 19th May and lets see if they can find out the actual cause.

But for precaution I would like to mention that if sombodys system (ipad or iphone) is not cover under warranty, they should not upgrade to 5.1.1. for their own safety because compare to the risk involved their is nothing special about the features of this upgrade.

Here's a guess as to what might have happened:

When you install a software update like 5.1.1 the system has to reboot. The reboot involves initializing the WiFi chip being used (the iPads all use Broadcom chips - iPad 1 and 2 the BCM 4329 and new iPad the BCM 4330). This initialization might detect an error in the chip and fail giving the greyed out WiFi status - No WiFi. Now the error detected might not have been affecting the way you were actually using WiFi or, perhaps, the error report could be wrong (this is why choosing Reset Network Settings sometimes solves this problem - it reinitializes). But if the error continues to be detected you lose WiFi. This is a hardware problem which is coincidentally detected at a hardware update.

Note this is just speculation.

Well finally I did receive a new iPad from apple (Thanks to them) and this time upgrade to ios5.1.1 went through smoothly.

The only one difference that I have made is that I was connected with iTunes during the upgrade process, last time I was not.

So far didnt notice any issue with the new iOS 5.1.1 on the new iPad.

Thanks everyone for their suggestion. Sincerly hope apple may find out the actual reason of the mess in wifi due to upgrade to ios 5.1.1 in my iPad.

Well, my wife's new iPad "3" is still not connecting but both our iPhone 4 are. All have been upgradedd to 5.1.1.

We use an Airport Extreme plus two Airport Express to extend.

So if anyone finds more info, please post.

Thank you.

PS: And of course Apple's Support is not 24/7. But I'm not sure they will know more or as much as this thread has reported.

Mine solved by turning off wireless printer.

I'm guessing that for some reason, the iPad would not request a different IP address or the Airport Extreme would not assign a new one, however the works, resulting in a continual block of the iPad using the network since it would try to connect using the previously assigned IP address. That's my untechie guess.

Thanks for listening.

I have just found 1 source of connection problems. I don't know if this is the same problem you have, but just in case it helps someone i'll post it here.

I am on iOS 5.0.1. My wifi didn't drop out (ie wifi bars didn't change to 3g/edge/gprs) but it did just stop working. Not even slow down - just stop, nothing would download. Turning the phone's wifi off and back on appeared to fix it.

My router was sending 4 DNS addresses - 1 ipv4 and 3 ipv6. The 1st ipv6 address was invalid. After removing the invalid address from the router and restarting the phones wifi the problem appears to have gone.

I don't know why this caused a problem. I thought a DNS query was sent to all addresses and the 1st reply used.

To check if your phone is using an invalid DNS adderss go to Settings -> wifi -> your wifi.

Tap on DNS to scroll if you have more than 1 DNS address.

Go to a computer, open a terminal and try to ping the addresses from the phone using ping for ipv4 addresses and ping6 for ipv6 addresses.

ie,

ping 192.0.43.10

ping6 2001:500:88:200::10

Hi,

I noticed that lots of people are trying to change their iPod's and iPhone's MAC addresses and new models are not allowing spoofing MAC addresses through ifconfig and nvram method, by itself, doesn't let you use media features.

I came up with a solution, which probably most of you didn't notice.

Follow the steps to change your MAC address permanently (it stays same after reboot and you can keep using the media features):

1- Jailbreak your device in order to use a terminal emulator.

2- Download a terminal emulator.

3- Launch it and type "su". This will give you root previleges.

4- It will want you to enter the root password. Predefined password is "alpine".

5- Type "whoami" to check whether if you have root previleges.

6- Type "nvram wifiaddr=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX". X'es are the MAC address you want to imitate.

7- Reboot your device. You will notice that your MAC address has been changed to the one you entered but unfortunately you can't access to your music library.

8- Now, you should download the latest firmware from [REMOVED]] and load it into your device by holding SHIFT and clicking restore. After the restoration is complete, you can jailbreak if you want.

9- You have a device with the MAC address you want and you can use the media features without a problem.

Good luck.
