I think that some of the viewers here may be mistaken as to what the usage screen is telling them. It means since you last charged your battery that you have used x number of hours and or minutes in some why and that the phone has been idle for x number of hours and or minutes. If you look at like this it makes it easier to understand. It mat have helped if the words on the screen were changed to used time and idle time instead on usage and standbye. Anyway I have had no problems but I don't discount that others have had or may be having battery problems. I checked mine, a 4s, as soon as I took it off the charger this morning so the counters had 0 and 0 for use and standby at 100% charge. I checked it just now, 2.5 hours later and I have 98% charge with use at 31 minutes and stby at 2 hours. I,ve had 5 emails, 1 10 minute call, and several IM's. This seens about rightbto me. I'll check again at lunch.

Here is Apples explanation of what usage means:

OK - I reported this battery issue yesterday, and after reading everything I could, I took the easiest route first to try and fix this. I closed all background apps and let the phone drain to 0% and turn off by itself. Then put it on the charger for about 3 1/2 hours and took it off, reading 100%. It's been on standby for 4 1/2 hours, with 1 1/4 hours in use, and the meter is now at 87%. Considering that yesterday, I lost 52% in 3 hours doing nothing, I would count this as a big improvement.

This was an OTA update, iPhone 4, version 5.1 to 5.1.1 update. If I find anything else weird about this issue, I will report back. Right now, I consider the issue resolved on my phone - but watching closely.

well guys if you are unsatisfied with new IOS 5.1.1 just downgrade to 5.1, i updated yesterday and i realized my battery drain was increased, so, i did a downgrade without any problem to 5.1, i'll wait more time to see how the IOS 5.1.1 will be, and maybe i'll upgrade again, or wait for 5.1.2, as you guys can see the IOS5.1.1 doesn't have nothing important to the iphone.

I set mine to auto-brightness, and the slide bar is at the halfway mark. Also, I have location services turned on for only Siri and Maps although I don't really use them too often.

Bluetooth is on along with iTunes Wi-Fi syn. My network setting are set to only join trusted network versus notifying of new available networks (Not sure if this really affects anything, but is more of an annoyance if I walk into an area with open Wi-Fi). Twitter is also off as well since I don't need to get Twitted while I'm out and about.

I let my run down last night, but it didnt get to 0%. If I remember correctly, it was in the mid 40's when I placed in on the charger because I knew I'd need it for work today. So, when I left home this morning, I reset my usage data so that I could see how much talk time and Kb useage I did. I also had two apps update this morning before I pulled it off the charger (WeatherBug and Pixlromatic). I also noticed that the phone didnt drop from 100% to 99% until about 30 mins after being off the charger. Yesterday, it had dropped to 95% before I had left my home (about 10mins).

I wasnt at the office today, so I was basically on 3G the entire time. I took the phone of the charger at around 7:30. It is currently 4:30 (aka 16:30). I have 74% battery left. My usage time is 2hrs 31mins. Standby is 9hrs 6mins. Cellular usage is 14 mins and data is sent 628Kb received 1.9Mb. Most of my workday was spent in standby, as you can tell.

What I did differently today was that I closed all apps immediately after using them, sans messages. It ran in the background. Doing this seems to have saved me some battery drop (and also defeats the purpose of multitasking). But, when I did use safari, I noticed that it was still hemmoraging battery percentage at the rate of about 3-5% per minute of use (or there abouts). It seems that safari is my battery hog. While I dont have enough test data to fully say that, thats how it seems on an initial control testing.

Look,

it's quite simple. I upgraded yesterday. Since then my battery is draining so fast the phone shuts down after a couple of hours. It didn't do that before. so SOMETHING has changed.

I wish APPLE tested their software before throwing it on my phone. To be honest, I was really happy with my apple products, but now one after the other starts giving me aggrevation.

There are plenty on here that are going to say it's in your head or that you're just not paying attention to your usage or whatever. The fact is, that for some of us, our battery started to drain way more than it should with whatever 5.1.1 did. Many will say that it didnt do anything, but it did something to my phone or one of my apps.

As of yesterday, mine seemed to have slowed somewhat. Of course, I wasnt on it as much, so my standby time seems ok. Many would argue that 26% battery drop for 2.5hrs of usage on 3G is par. I will be away from the office again today, so Im going to see what my results are again on 3G (see if I get repeated results). Then Ill compare them to wifi the next time Im in the office all day and see if wifi is the culprit or what.

I want to stay with iPhone, but because of work, I may be going Android if Apple doesn't figure out how to stretch their batteries better. Whether or not my battery is on par for their specs (I dont think it is), there is no excuse to have overall bad battery life compared to the competiton. I need to make it through my workday without having to scramble for a charger during it (as I cant always be around a power source). Before iOS 5, my battery was just fine....since then, it's tanked compared to what it was. Yes, that was 5.0, 5.1 (better, but not pre-5 standard), and now 5.1.1.

Liam, sounds like you have the classic issue of needing a battery calibration. What you need to do is hard reset the iPhone by pressing the sleep and home button at the same time until the phone reboots. Let the phone drain until it totally cuts off with the spinning star, then plug it in and leave it undisturbed until its past 100% (preferably overnight) but at least 1.5 hours AFTER it reaches 100%. That should get the battery meter more in tune with reality and increase the battery life you will get from the phone as well.

Hi

I wasn't aware there was ongoing battery issues, as i didn't have any.

But since upgrading to 5.1.1 as soon as my iphone4 gets to 20% is shuts down with no power. When recharging, it starts immediately with 27/28%. When fully charged it stays on 100% for ages before the it starts to tick down.

It would appear that something has changed.

To all here who are having issues with battery after an update there is a process you can try that has a high success rate solving this issue after an iOS update.

Go to settings>general>reset> reset all settings. Once the iPhone reboots select "set up as new". This will NOT delete your data so its safe to select this option. Run through the wizard setting up your preferred options. Once finished the iPhone will have your data intact but will require you to set up wall paper and any wifi networks you had. Last piece is to allow the phone to drain completely until the spinning star and it cuts off, then charge undisturbed to 100% waiting at least 1.5 hrs after it hits 100%.

This is a common issue when there are iOS updates especially OTA. The process above has helped numerous folks who have experienced this issue after an update.
