I updated via wifi but i had about 80% charge so it was fine my sons was at 49% and his was fine I only had to reset wallpaper and wifi.. We both had serious battery drainage as soon as the update was done (no other changes) I then read to drain and chrge to 100% but it wasn't working for some.. but another post said that he kept repeating the drain/charge cycle and after 3rd attempt their battery was better than ever so i thought i had nothing to lose, as i felt like binning my phone lol.... I drained my phone put it on charge after about 5 mins i turned my phone off and let it charge for about 3 hours i then repeated this.... after second time there was a difference after 3rd its great and its been great since... except the wifi drops out regularly and i have a problem with imessage..

good luck

The reset all should not erase data. Perhaps you selected the "erase all content and settings"? I have never heard anyone who performed the "reset all settings" to have all data wiped. Not to say it cant happen but even the message states all data will remain. It resets "settings" not the iPhone. So all networks (wifi) and other preferences such as wallpaper need to be set back up but apps and data should stay intact.

Also you should be able to activate an iPhone with iOS 5 without iTunes. So even if you wiped it to factory you should be able to run through the wizard to turn it back on without iTunes.

Thanks, and eeek!,

I have reset all and it has wiped my phone and I need to connect to iTunes. Trouble is all the hardwired and wifi networks in this site block iTunes. I dont think I have iCloud.

I have just had to borrow an unlocked phone to put my sim in untill I get home tonight.

After rolling back to iOS 5 and fully charging the battery, I'm having the same problem. Going to try the full-discharge/full-recharge again to see if that does anything. I'm thinking the 5.1.1 update may have been a coincidence and not a cause, in which case I'm in the market for a battery replacement or taking up Apple on the $150 swap for a refurbed phone with a good battery.

For those who have replied here saying there is no battery drain issue, they are fortunate. It does seem to be hit or miss as to who experiences it. Our family experienced exactly the same battery drain behavior on two iPhones. Ultimately, and surprisingly, it fixed itself. Here was our experience that I shared with a couple of my tech friends. Sharing it with you FYI, along with a preventative, pre-test maintenance step you should take

Interesting re the IOS upgrade

I originally turned in our 1.75 year old iPhone 4's because both were experience abnormal battery drain.

Then we got our new iPhones and they too were experiencing terrible battery drain, like 20%/hour

I was about to take them back and then realized a few days later it fixed itself

So on this 5.1.1 upgrade, when the same thing happened I figured I had best wait a few days before I started complaining

Yesterday, on the third day, I called to ask them, since I hadn't sync'd the new iOS yet, if I could do a restore to revert to the old iOS

The conversation got cut off and I planned to call back today.

This morning at 7:00 I had 100% battery

Now at 11:30, I've got 96%

Wife's - 3 hours after off charger still at 100%

So it appears, while it took a couple of days longer than with the new phone, that this iOS 5.1.1 has ultimately fixed itself

Amazing

But here is some preventative maintenance and/or a pre-battery drain test procedure:

I learned from the first time around on this, when potential battery problems arise, it is important to clear the app cache

To do that, when the home screen is up, double tab on the home button. The cache icons will appear a at the bottom, replacing your four favorite icons. If you haven't done this before, if you scroll through them from right to left, there will probably be 50 of these cached icons (apps previously opened). They will have the traditional x in the top corner to delete each. You need to delete all of them. Then wait a day or two and see if the drain continues

You are correct. 5.1.1 is not the cause. Battery problems are reported periodically with every release, and between releases. The cause is, and has always been, an app that is running in background and is sending data, or attempting to send and failing and retrying. I suspect it happens more often after an update because the update process interrupts data transmissions in progress and not all apps can recover gracefully. Exchange email cannot, for example.

I was only receiving about 2 hours of usage prior to the update and was already frustrated... as well as having the problem of my phone getting HOT while charging or during calls lasting longer than 3 minutes. I updated today, it took hours. I completed the update and my last full charge shows 51 minutes ago. I have NOT used my phone and am losing approximately 1% about every six seconds. In fact when I started typing this post (from my iPad - Not my phone) I was at 90%.... I am now at 88%. Oh excuse me... It just dropped to 87%.

I have had iPhones since they were first out, my 3G was great, the 4G was good... But a little less battery time. I have been completely disappointed with the 4S as most of the bells and whistles have to be turned off to conserve battery power! What a waste! And what ticks me off more than anything is that since I hate to be under contract, I paid full price for the 64GB phone! ( only 55 available due to software).

My battery percentage is now at 85%. Totally draining and FAST!
