if you have tried all the fixes then take it to the Apple store for an exchange. You have a 1 year warranty even if you did not get the AppleCare plan. Let the Geniuses watch it drain and explain why. Are you saying both your iPad and iPhone are not working? Perhaps you have some rogue app on them (same one) that's causing the problems.

I was only receiving about 2 hours of usage prior to the update and was already frustrated... as well as having the problem of my phone getting HOT while charging or during calls lasting longer than 3 minutes. I updated today, it took hours. I completed the update and my last full charge shows 51 minutes ago. I have NOT used my phone and am losing approximately 1% about every six seconds. In fact when I started typing this post (from my iPad - Not my phone) I was at 90%.... I am now at 88%. Oh excuse me... It just dropped to 87%.

I have had iPhones since they were first out, my 3G was great, the 4G was good... But a little less battery time. I have been completely disappointed with the 4S as most of the bells and whistles have to be turned off to conserve battery power! What a waste! And what ticks me off more than anything is that since I hate to be under contract, I paid full price for the 64GB phone! ( only 55 available due to software).

My battery percentage is now at 85%. Totally draining and FAST!

i tried this and so far it IS working .. so try it ...

my ip4s was dropping 10% per hour if not more ..

since applying this method and upon full recharge my phone now is 55% with 4 hours 6 min usage and 16 hours 36 min standby ..

fingers crossed things will keep on goin good ..

Goodluck ..

To all here who are having issues with battery after an update there is a process you can try that has a high success rate solving this issue after an iOS update.

Go to settings>general>reset> reset all settings. Once the iPhone reboots select "set up as new". This will NOT delete your data so its safe to select this option. Run through the wizard setting up your preferred options. Once finished the iPhone will have your data intact but will require you to set up wall paper and any wifi networks you had. Last piece is to allow the phone to drain completely until the spinning star and it cuts off, then charge undisturbed to 100% waiting at least 1.5 hrs after it hits 100%.

This is a common issue when there are iOS updates especially OTA. The process above has helped numerous folks who have experienced this issue after an update.

I'm very weary about updating to this new 5.1.1. Since I've gotten my phone it has been generally very good on battery life and I've only had a few minor anomalies since getting the phone, which blew my android out of the water. I'm skeptical about this update, the ones previous to this I have had no problem with. I'm just asking since I see so many people experiencing issues, should I update my iPhone 4S or just wait for a good update that fixes these issues? I'm new to all this but from what I've gleaned when I comes to many of the battery issues my friends have had its just basics. Some people weren't closing out of there apps, double-tapping the home button, holding on an app and pressing the red circle to close the apps. Another way to conserve battery poweris to turn off useless notifications that drain battery power, lower the brightness and turn off wifi. Push notification I find that drain the most battery life. Obviously the type of drainage these people are losing battery prevents ever other minute. I hope they are able to get a reliable firmware update out soon.

If you wait until there are supposedly no more battery issues, you'll be waiting forever. Search around, and you will find that for every software/firmware update, that there were people writing about battery drain issues. All versions.

I'm not saying that they don't exist, I believe them.

It may affect some and not others.

You have to decide - do the benefits outweigh the possible risks?

Are you happy enough with the phone as is? Is there something in 5.1.1 that you want, enough to update and risk possible battery drain?

I am happy with 5.0.1, and don't feel the need to update. I've had no issues.

Richardvia, what version are you running currently? Most folks do not have issues (not ones here on support forums but in the world) with the iOS updates. The vast majority of folks work fine. I myself had the battery bug sorta when I first got my 4s in Nov 2011. Had to plug in by 6:00 pm after starting at 8:00am. Not as bad as some users have indicated but still not a full day. iOS 5.0.1 came out shortly afterwards and I immediately saw a huge improvement. Been great every since after all the updates( 5.0.1, 5.1 and now 5.1.1) and making the recommended setting changes with notifications, fetch and locations, time zone etc. I did have an issue just after 5.1 and had to perform the reset procedure I described earlier in this thread. As soon as I did that all back to normal again with super battery life.

So I myself am one who likes to be at the latest version of software due to security issues and bugs fixed so I would recommend updating. I did have the OCNA (outgoing call no audio) issue a few times prior to 5.1 and that was resolved. Also the new functionallity of 5.1 I like. However the reality is if you are not having problems there may be no burning reason to update. iOS 5.1.1.did close some security holes so it that concerns you it may be good to do it.

Lastly, as I understand it, Apple continues signing previous iOS for maybe 2 weeks after an update so typically you can downgrade back (not always) if there are issues that cannot be resolved. If you read through and see Lawerence's posts you will see that has been the same throughout history and the iOS typically is not the cause of the problems but other things like apps and settings getting hosed during the update process.

I hope this helps and gives you some food for thought.

Thank you for your response. I did try all the fixes and then some today and it is doing better. The thing that finally helped the most was turning off notifications on the calendar. There was an immediate difference. I also let the battery fully drain and recharged overnight to 100% and left it on the charger until about 9:30 am. It is now 5:30 pm and I have 33% battery left ... So it has helped a lot!

My iPhone is the only one with the problem. I haven't updated my iPads yet, and both are on day 2 of a full charge with about 55% remaining.

Back on page 4 there is info. Basically download the ipsw file http://gdeluxe.com/ios-firmware-ipsw-download-links/ then in iTunes hold shiftl key and press the update button then browse to the ipsw file you just downloaded..

How can i downgrade to 5.1?? With 5.1.1 there is a very fast battery drain in the usage!!! I want downgrade please help me!! Iphone 4s

May 15, 2012 5:57 PM in response to EmanueleCE

Just do a Software Reset in Definitions and General Reset Menu and Reset All..make sure you did a backup on itunes previously.

Then after 1 ou 2 resets to make sure, just leave it charging 1h and half after it reaches 100%.

Try again using. Most of users are saying that its a huge difference in this update, im still testing and satisfied what i can see till now. Try this cause 5.1.1 is better than 5.1

EmanueleCE,

Yes grikster is correct. Its most likely not the 5.1.1. update that's causing your issue. See my previous post top of page 4 in this thread. You had asked about downgrading so I provided you that info. The reality is the reset most likely will resolve the issue. Also you may need to delete any exchange email accounts you may have, reboot the iPhone then add them back. That is also a known issue causing your issue. Again, 5.1.1 itself is not creating this issue.
