NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 Kernel Panics/Freezes in Lion & late Snow Leopard

I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. So this thread is specific to NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 running OS X Lion (10.7-10.7.3), to avoid confusion and cross-polination of different issues.

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac9,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08

SMC Version (system): 1.37f3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 130:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 130

Type: GPU

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 512 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x062e

Revision ID: 0x00a1

ROM Revision: 3370

Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:

  • Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
  • Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
  • Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
  • Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.

Some solutions/attempts to solve:

  • Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
  • Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
  • Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
  • Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
  • Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.

My diagnosis so far:

OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.

My request for help and information:

  • If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
  • If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
  • Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.

I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.

Aarghh again, now nearly every day, just hangs on this graphic card driver bug.

There is a bit of a change of crash-behaviour now; the last 2 times just a window would be distoreted, so my document window would be all distorted while the desktop is still looking fine, I can still move my mouse, but nothing responds anymore. it happend in chrome, safari, coda, illustrator and photoshop(cs5)

I really can't work like this, I'm still running 10.7.5 to scared to upgrade,

I hope this is fixed with Mavericks

Please apple fix this nvidia gt130 graphic issue!!

Fix This asap!

Just in case this will help someone else having this problem with an 2009 iMac GT 130 I thought I'd post a workaround that I've been using for a few days with some success. I'm using iStat Menu to raise the rpm of the machine fan via the sensors control. Its noisy (maybe why Apple won't "fix" this issue as it would make their machine seem less attractive) but I've set it to 3000 rpm and its able to keep the chip temperatures down to below 100.

I've not had the freezes while using my CADD program rendering complex graphics since installing and setting iStat. I've also been careful to minimize any application that I am not using. Kind of a pain as you have to reset iStat from time to time but it has eliminated 4-5 freezes a day and I'm able to get something done.

I'm using smcFanControl, but no help

Just an other day and an other crash

lost again work and time ... I'm about to throw this mac out of the window, shame of the $2K spend on it... I'm loosing work and money now...

Is there anyone who has tried Mavericks?

Please tell me they fixed the driver there !!

After more kernel panics and many months of sending testing to David P. I was suddenly told he had moved departments & was no longer dealing with my case. My new apple helper was somebody called Majella. Majella was as helpful as David & was sorry David had been moved without me being informed and admitted Apple had lost me in the system & forgot me. Majella then did the same tests as David. I had to download some app then send her the results (same app as David before) These where sent to apples hardwear & softwear boffins & I was told to wait yet again. Meanwhile to keep sending in the kernal panic reports. Which i did. They still did not know what was causing it & there was still no graphic card update.

I then got the email from Majella. After a couple of weeks when no fault could be found.

You last kernal crash report shows you graphic card has a fault & you need to take it to a authorised apple repair shop to be replaced.

Even though all the kernal panic reports I had been sending since the 22 sept 2012 had shown no graphic card error.

(I had a similar problem with my 2006 imac that in the end caused both graphic card & hard drive failure. This is now a jukebox for my iTunes (No good for anything else as it wont run the lion even)

The reason I bought the current imac was the 2006 imac was in the Apple repair shop so much.)

I had spoken to David about this & said i was hot really happy about continuing to use my imac till the kernal issue was fixed as I was expecting the overheating & the kernal panics to cause either a hardrive or graphic card failure. After the expense on the 2006 model I did not want graphic card failure or another hard drive to go.

The apple answer was nothing is showing to indicate thats the problem We still think it looks like a sofwear issue.

Now Apple are saying its the graphic card not the softwear? Therefor i am not covered. But its the kernel panics that have caused the graphic card to pack up.

I can't replace the graphic card myself. Apple wont go any further till there approved repair shop does testing on my graphic card at my cost. Even thought its there inablity to solved the softwear fault thats caused my graphic card fault.

I guess i've been shafted again.

My imac is still having kernal panics. It still freezes the restarts itself with out me doing anything.

I'm no mac wizz so i have no idea if it is my graphics card of a softwear issue.

All i know is i can't depend on it not to crash.

Even my lad playing ceebies games about as basic as you can get for a game makes it crash. But then it will be alright for days at at time. You then open & email or a safari window with nothing else open & it goes into shutdown mode.

I have lost hours trying to help apple solve this issue & nothing back. I'm hoping the imac when it comes out does not have this issue.

I'm going to wait and see what the the new imac is priced at before, sending this in for repair. I need to transfer all my work to something else before it goes in. I cant run my life without the information stored on the imac. So will have to yet again buy a new something to work on.

But unless apple can convince me the problem will not reaccur it won't be my 4th imac!

Hi Drunken Hobo, sounds like you are at your wit's end with this now. 😟

Nothing heard back from David the original poster, but assuming he had the card replaced. I had my card replaced by Apple back in March (costing me £230 I think), it had a warranty of 3 months. Of course just in the last week or two the graphics, blocking up and freezing has started up just as the heat wave his hit. So thermal problems would not have been revealed earlier.

Before going from SL to ML I didn't have any problems (even though some people say that later release of SL had the problem, I didn't have any problems with it). As soon as ML was installed from the App Store it messed everything up, even reverting to SL didn't solve it. With the replaced card I again tried to go from SL to ML but the same thing happened, but I reverted quickly to SL before any damage could be done permenantly, but as I say with the summer warmth it can no longer take it. I'm not interested in having my fans on all the time either. I think that it is a hardware issue, cause by some firmware upgrade that took place on my machine.

I definately am not in the remotest interested in trying out Mavericks, as to me the upgrade to ML was the cause to the issue (very happy with SL and should have stuck with it). I only wish Apple had just said that this machine was not suitable for ML.

As I have said before, this crashing imac is just for web surfing. Any serious work now such as final cut pro work is carried out on my self build pc running ML, which seems to be able to cope with it fine. I highly recommend looking around as I think this is pretty shocking what they have done to our machines and would not trust them again with such a big investment in one piece of hardware.

I've had to move all my files to my 2011 Mac Mini... it's a dual core i5, but it has an nvidia graphics chip... and yes, it does crash too, but not anything like my 2009 iMac.

But, I have noticed that if I'm using my 2009 iMac and the memory is full (from the activity monitor) and I reach temperatures above 130F, my system crashes. Mostly happens when I'm in Lightroom, now using 5 and it's a little better. The crashes seem to happen when I'm doing heavy spot removal. Seems the algorythms are pretty hardware intensive and it's trying to keep the history. I've had a few issues with Photoshop, but for the most part it's working. When I publish my photos to flickr, I'm hanging around 125-130F. And yes this is using SMC fan control at 3000+RPM.

Most of this doesn't happen on the Mac Mini, but I do notice a lag when doing the Spot Removal in LR5. I noticed the same lag happening with my buddies quad core i7 and it's using an nvidia graphics card!

So, I'm still not sure, but my money is on the ML drivers with nvidia graphics chips.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on replacing my GT 130 card with the ATI 4850. My iMac can use both (all 2009 3.02 iMacs can). I'm hoping that the memory management of Mavericks helps solve the overtasking of the iMac hardware. I can only hope.

And as I have previously posted, I have reapplied the thermal paste on my GT 130 card several times. Still no luck.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 and SL, same problems as w/ other OS. Have the fan closest to graphics chip running at 3k, seems to help but completely destroys the elegance of the silent imac design. I haven't upgraded OSs yet b/c everyone says its either the same or worse. More pain I DON'T need.

It is a chip driver/OS incompatibility problem and Apple should be obligated to offer a fix, or NVIDIA, IMHO. Hate to let customer satisfaction get in the way of that multi-billion dollar cash reserve Apple is sitting on. Wonder how many units of this series of IMacs are still running w/ this config and having this problem? Doubt Steve Jobs would put up w/ this situ w/o firing someone for incompetence.

Seeing same issues here- late 2009 iMac, 27 in. Took it to two repair shops, both Apple authorized. Quoted at a whopping $1800 to fix it (saying they'd have to replace the entire logic board). I paid almost 2.5K for this machine (including add-ons) in early 2010, which works out to roughly $800 a year. That's some ugly math- I could've bought a different laptop every year for that rate, all 3 of which would probably still be working now.

After 2 hours on the phone with Apple including 5 transfers and two call backs (plus diagnostic fees and two weeks of wasted travelling as stores are not near me), I've purchased a brand new Samsung laptop. I'm looking forward to learning Windows 8.....Apple definitely lost a long time customer today. I've only bought Apple for the past 10 years, but won't be buying or recommending one anytime soon. More and more of us in the music community are finding out the dirty secret: we can once again center a home studio around a PC easier and cheaper, something I would've never dreamed of in 2009. Sorry for the non-techy post (still relatively green in many of those areas), but wanted to add another tally to this growing scorecard. Get it together Apple- make up for your manufacturing mistakes and you'd keep more of your clientele.

PS- it says this discussion branched out to another topic, but I am unauthorized to view? https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5044860 Is there other info or cases we/I am not privy to?

Went to my local apple store on saturday, the guy at the Genius bar ran a primary check on the machine and find nothing wrong with it. More extensive checks will be ran this week but he already made me sing a work order for a graphic card replacement. around 200$ canadian... I Guess it's cheaper than getting a new machine. Hopefully this will fix the problem...
