wifi: no hardware found after 10.7.4 update

Hi -

After I did the 10.7.4 update on my mid-2010 macbook pro core i7 this evening, my wifi adapter/internet is not working, it is grayed out and says "no wifi hardware found". I have re-booted my machine 4-5 times but that did not help.

Apparently, if I boot into recovery partition via holding Cmd+R > there my wifi is working and is properly connected. Infact, I am writing this message through that receovery partition safari window connected to wifi just fine.

Another weird nothing I noticed is if I boot into the Safari-only Guest User account, there also wifi is working just fine, no problem.

However, in both of my user accounts, it is giving me this "no wifi hardware found" error and won't connect to internet. In fact, ethernet wasn't working as well in user accounts.

Any suggestions besides taking to apple store?

To all those having the problem. In the future make sure you have a bootable clone of your Mac on an external USB hdd in addition to or in place of Time machine backup. It is the easiest way to recover your entire Mac when problems arise.

I had the same issue here:

- Macbook air (13 inch, late 2010).

- FileVault 2 enabled (the OS X Lion version; the machine did not come with Lion originally, but FileVault was only enable after Lion was installed).

The machine was fine with 10.7.3.

After updating to 10.7.4 wifi was not working (the infamous "no wifi hardware found" message).

Wifi is fine when the guest account is started (this is the Safari only guest account).

Wifi is also fine when the recovery disk is booted (from a USB stick).

After disabling FileVault & a reboot wifi is working OK again.

Just to be sure I installed the 10.7.4 combo update (not sure if that was needed).

After reinstall of 10.7.4 wifi is still working fine.

Enabled FileVault again.

After reboot wifi is still working OK.

Man, I've been going crazy on this problem for like two weeks since initially updating to 10.7.3.

I've tried everything shy of wiping my drive and performing a fresh install (I'm in the middle of the a project).

But, I've performed multiple archive and installs, applied combo updates and created new user accounts, not to mention a million restarts, PRAM / SMC resets and System Config file dumps.

Nothing works for long! I even found a thread that suggested replacing the kexts (which I did too) It always goes away after a while.

Apple couldn't figure it out either and my local Apple Store replaced first the wifi card and then the entire logic board several days later. Still no dice!

In over 15 years of owning Macs, this is the worst experience I've ever had with an Apple product.

To anyone still having this issue:

I just finished my fourth trip to the Apple Store re: no recognition of my airport card after two clean installs. It turns out that Lion does not talk well with older airport cards. The problem was not that I had a failing airport card or that my system or home folders were corrupt in any way. Lion simply does not talk well with older airport cards, and Apple does not believe this is a significant issue to address (none of the techs had heard any word that there was a fix in the pipeline). My original airport card came with my early 2008 Macbook Pro. For $70 (Apple Store didn't charge me labor because of the multiple appointments and hastle I'd gone through re: this issue) I upgraded from a version 1 aiport card to the most recent version 4. Now my wifi is back and working as good as new. No need for any workarounds or reinstalls.

I hope this helps some of you.
