Google maps does not work

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my Macbook Pro. No matter which browser I use, Google maps will not render the map detail - instead it just shows the target location with a letter 'A' or whatever, but the background map is just grey with no features. It makes no difference how long I wait either. I have used the various features in browsers to clear out the 'junk' and have used 'reset safari' when in that browser, Still no joy. I have had the MBP for two years and I expect this simple feature to work as it does on all my Windows PC's and iPhone. I am at my wits end and feel somewhat duped into the Apple world by the triumph of 'form' over function. I want to love my MAC but it aggravates me instead because I spend too much time trying to figure out how to get basic features working when in fact they should work first time without user intervention.

Has anyone got a 5 minute fix for this ridiculous fault please? I cannot upload a screen grab either because (1) this Apple forum wont allow upload of my screengrabbed jpgs of tiffs, or (2) my MBP wont allow it (despite them being within the expected size limit). Another spectacular own goal by Apple.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.8Ghz Intel, 4Gb DDR

This is a user-to-user forum. Ranting fixes nothing.

What location are you trying to map? There are places still without detailed Google Maps in some views (*see examples below).

Could be a video hardware or video memory issue.

Which MacBook Pro model do you have? (, About This Mac, More Info..., Hardware, Graphics/Displays)

A model with two video chipsets perhaps?

Does the (Google Maps) Satellite, Terrain View, or Street View give different results for the same location(s)?

Does Mapquest or Bing Maps have the problem with the same location(s)?

(this post does not let me copy/paste text from Pages application where I had to compose my reply - how annoying! I used Pages because your reply is on Page 1 of this Post and my reply goes to Page 2 - I cannot copy/paste between posts across those two pages. Ridicuous!)

Hi, Yes the 'Dock' - I remember now. Yes Firefox is in the Apps folder under Guest Account so here are the results of just testing Google Maps under both that Guest account and then under my main account:

  • GUEST: SAFARI - did not work (same issue) / FIREFOX: worked just fine!
  • MAIN: SAFARI - did not work (same issue) / FIREFOX: did not work (same issue)

Those Internet Plug-in Folder lists:

The one under Mac HD Library: (see screengrab image below for list)....

The one under my Main account: NOTHING listed in there at all.

What do you think this all means?

I just noticed that your Google Earth Web Plugin is dated 17 Oct 2011. You might want to try all this stuff with the latest versions.

If you go to,

http://www.google.com/earth/index.html

Click "Download Google Earth" to go to the the download page, uncheck the "Include Google Chrome" checkbox, and click agree, you will download the latest Google Earth and its plugin. They are version 6.2.2.6613 and the plugin is dated 4 Apr 2012. See if these updated versions make any difference.

Of course restart the browsers when you change any plugins.
