Prior to reading Myra J's post, "Internet Sharing" was the only box checked in "System Preferences"/"Sharing" on my mid 2011 iMac. "Security" was set to "None".

Result: the WiFi signal was recognizable, available and connectable. However, it failed to allow my iPad and Android phone to actually use the internet or any applications that use internet services. This was variable to some degree - sometimes it would work for a couple minutes and then cut out. Turning "Security" on to "WEP" made it worse, shortening the amount of time it worked.

After reading Myra J's post, I kept all "Internet Sharing" related settings the same as above and simply checked the following three boxes in "System Preferences"/"Sharing": "Sceen Sharing", "Scanner Sharing", "Web Sharing".

Result: the WiFi signal is working regularly now for about 12 hours.

Others experiencing these same problem should try simply checking these three boxes. Please report back with either:

"Checking Three More Boxes Allowed Internet Sharing to Work"

or

"Checking Three More Boxes Didn't Allow Internet Sharing to Work"

Looking forward to hearing from others...

Also looking forward to an update/fix from Apple that allows Security to be used again...

I just tried this with following results. Have also posted to the Dutch site, but really, really appreciate any advice:

Hi, I just followed these instructions, but at the end when I was supposed to restart, I shut down instead.

Now when i push the power button to start back up, I keep getting a message that says:

" You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the power button again."

In the background, there is what looks like a terminal window. There are a lot of messages, but one says:

"Unable to find the driver for this platform..."

Then later on:

"can't perform kext scan: no kext summary"

This is on an mac mini that was recently upgraded to Lion 10.4.

Really appreciate any help.

Sorry, thinc, I have no solution for you at this stage, I'm a guy with a problems, but few solutions.

My solution to the Sharing problem, which I know is not for everyone (so I'm not promoting it) was: just use another, older computer to share the internet connection from.

It means running a computer just to serve as a Wifi router, which is kind of insane, and obviously can't be promoted as an adequate solution.

I hope someone answers you quick. I would venture your solution would go along the lines of a safe-restart, backup and reinstallation of the original operating system. If you're running TIme Machine, this may be even easier, but I don't know, because I don't use it.
