I solved the problem with a Lion reinstall. The iMac (mid 2011) has a recovery partition with OS 10.7.3 configured into the hard drive. I rebooted using Command-R and went home for the night. Next morning all is well. Internet sharing is back to speed. It was working but extremely slow so no one was able to work effectively. Kext Utility did not work to get internet sharing back to speed after updating to OS 10.7.4 on mid 2011 iMacs. I will refrain from updating the OS until this issue is resolved.

The Apple Care Senior Advisor called me back this afternoon (he left a message on my voice mail). Told me to turn off security on Internet Sharing (I had WEP Security). I turned it off, and lo and behold, I have sharing back! It's been working good for over an hour.

He did say in the message that knowing if this works will help towards a fix for this, and that I won't have to leave my sharing open without security.

Anyway, try turning off your security on your Internet Sharing in your system preferences and see if that helps. Good luck.

This is such a horse crap problem, come on Apple. 10 pages of posts, 2 weeks time and still no fix. I and I'm sure many others depend on this functionality. Mine does not work, have tried turning password on and off etc. No luck. Guess I'll need to try this Kext thing. Christ.

for those that the kext method did not work for....

you did open the utility. wait until it does a first few tasks. then dragged and dropped the kext file onto it. waited until it did a few tasks.

and then restarted?

did you all do that?

as, my iMac has been running ok since.

as for a update from Apple, the last email i received was that the senior advisor was going to check AGAIN with the engineers on the issue, but that he had heard nothing since.

so, i reckon they think that the issue to local to some computers/routers/networks rather than a widespread issue. :-(

Sharing from my iMac to my iPad and MacBook Pro has been okay for 24 hours now. Here's the configuration:

Firewall is OFF

Preferences --> Sharing:

Screen sharing, Scanner Sharing, Web Sharing and Internet Sharing are checked.

WiFi Options: Security is set to NONE. (to do this: uncheck Internet Sharing, you should have "Share your connection from:" then select how you connect (I connect with ethernet to a cable modem) "To computers using:" check WiFi. Then click on WiFi Options, and for security select None. (I think it's None - frankly I'm afraid to touch anything) - anyway, just make sure there is no security on your sharing.

Network preferences still shows self-assigned ip for the WiFi, but now I understand that the WiFi is a separate function from Sharing.

At one point last night, I did have to restart my iPad to make it connect. I was getting a weird chain link icon in the upper left of the screen (where the wifi connection should be)

The sense I got from the Senior Advisor is that they know there is a problem and they are addressing it. How long it will take is another story. He also said that they are not going to leave us with our Internet Sharing unsecure, so they are working on this.

I really hope this helps somebody.
