How do I send mail from my gmail alias?

I have a gmail account (1@gmail.com) that forwards to another gmail account (2@gmail.com). How do I respond to email in iPad mail from the forwarded account (1@gmail)? Right now, only 2@gmail.com can send email. This is possible in gmail in a browser but not in the Mail app. thank you!

"Enter the e-mail address(es) you want to "Send as" on this page and you're done! NOTE: it will take anywhere from several hours to a day to begin working. I set mine up at night, and the next morning I was able to send mail from my phone again."

Lorenzo, I am having an awful time getting this set up to work on my phone! I am following your instructions to a T, and I still receive the following error message when I send mail: "A copy has been placed in your Outbox. The sender address "xxxxx@gmail.com" [my "send as" alias e-mail address] was rejected by the server." Did you receive the following error message during your 24-hour waiting period? Or is this an indication of something else going on?

I am using the most recent version of IOS. IMAP is enabled on both accounts I am attempting to combine on iPhone. Please let me know if you have any other creative ideas / work arounds!

Hi,

I've done the comma thing and can send from the right alias etc in OSX Mavericks Mail, but no matter what I do, it still shows up on the receiver's end as sent from the primary address.

Even if I send a mail TO the alias, it gets received fine (in the primary address inbox), then if I REPLY, it shows as sending from the alias, but is still received on the other end as from the primary address.

What could I be doing wrong?

OriginalMacBabe,

I don't know if you ever got your question resolved because it's been a few years. Anyway, your post was helpful to me initially, so in case you never got the answer you were looking for, then I hope to return the favor.

Just like you said, listing the aliases in a comma separated list makes them available to you via the drop down list in the from field, but I wanted by default for my mail to be sent from the alias and NOT the actual email address. I had a thought and decided to put the address I wanted to send from first on the list. Viola, it worked! 🙂

I might have conquered this so feel compelled to share with everyone as I feel euphoric after many hours trying to set up my new work email address which uses GMAIL and an alias through there.

After reading many articles and discussions, and twiddling with things in gmail...

I made sure the security settings within my gmail account were switched off for the two-step verification settings, and were allowing less secure apps access (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en). Then I added the gmail account onto my i-phone in:

1) Settings > mail, contacts, calendars > add account > other (NOT GMAIL)

2) Enter name, email address of primary account, password and a description then click 'next'

3) On the IMAP Account information page in the incoming mail server enter imap.gmail.com in the host name line, then your primary GMAIL email address and password, and in the outgoing mail server box below add smtp.gmail.com, then enter your account primary email address and password in the boxes below (don't leave them blank despite the option being there) make sure the 'use SSL' tab is on and this should add the account allowing you to choose mail and notes to be synchronised

4) To add your alias in, go back into the account from the 'mail, contacts, calendars' area, select the account, go into it via the IMAP box above mail and notes, and in the IMAP account information at the top click into the Email which should show your primary GMAIL account. In here you can choose to add another email, so add your alias and hit 'return' on the keyboard, and you should be able to tick the one you want as a default.

A suggestion which worked before I got all the above working properly was to select my other email that's set up on the phone (an outitgoes account) and in there, I could add my alias into the email line as above. This worked but only through my mobile data and not my wifi - but the above has worked and my emails are sending through my wifi.

It has all come down to disabling the two-step account verification within gmail settings (it wasn't switched on in the first place but I turned it on, had to enter various passwords into my phone, then undid it and followed the link above), and being connected to my secure home wifi (don't try in a hotel / open wifi).

Hope this helps if anyone's still stuck!
